Pupil Headliners – December 2021
Fundraising for Malawi
Over £13,000 was raised for the Lancing College Malawi Project this term, a combination of the Malawi Walk in September and Seasonal Readings in December. This has paid for the continuing A level education and boarding fees of Norman at Kamuzu Academy, a year’s secondary school fees for five additional students, the tuition fees, accommodation and equipment for Brighton and Veronica at Mzuzu University, and Promise at the Malawi College of Nursing. Last week we donated £15,000 – our largest ever single donation – to purchase an ambulance (second-hand Toyota Landcruiser) for the Chuma Community Clinic in Blantyre – a building whose construction Lancing helped to fund in 2018-2019.
Sovereign Award
Well done to Upper Sixth Former Ollie F who received this award from Princess Anne for his volunteering work with St Johns ambulance. The award is given to young St John Ambulance volunteers in recognition of outstanding work in the areas of personal development, benefit to St John, and benefit to their community. It is awarded to a maximum of ten people worldwide, annually.
Debating Competition
The College took part in the first round of the ESU Schools’ Mace Debating Competition in November, where Vanessa H, Kitty C-H and Shirin M proposed the motion that fathers should be required to take paternity leave. The team made it through to the second round – many congratulations to Vanessa, Kitty and Shirin for a well-grounded, thoroughly researched and fiercely delivered debate
