Sporting Highlights – 16 June 2023
Girls’ Football
The culmination of a fantastic season ended with the return of Girls’ House Football.
33 goals, 16 matches and 75 girls across 5 Houses took part in the event hoping for House glory. A well supported event went down to a tense finish when the top two teams from the competition, Sankey’s and Handford, played in a nail biting final to determine who would be House Champions.
With Handford having taken the lead through Hattie S, Sankey’s Grace S scored with the last kick of the game to take the match to ‘Golden Goal’. The teams could not be separated, until a moment of magic from Daisy D-P, whose 25 yard volley sailed high into the air and over the Handford goalkeeper to give Sankey’s an incredible comeback victory. Delight for Sankey’s, heartbreak for Handford, but there was an immense feeling of pride towards all girls who took part. The attitude, work-rate, resilience and skill level exhibited by all pupils was exceptional to see.
Congratulations to Sankey’s winning team of Emma S, Grace S, Nerea K-M, Grace T, Jess S, Leia P, Sophia B, Daisy D-P and Evie M.
Final Standings:
- Winners – Sankey’s A
- 2nd – Handford
- 3rd – Field’s
- 4th – Manor A
- 5th – Sankey’s B

Lancing win by 45 runs. MVP was awarded to Cyrus D.
14B/15B v Christs Hospital
A case of third time lucky for the combined U14/15 side who one won their first game of the season convincingly by 78 runs. Lancing batted first and scored 179 for 3 including 25 from Shaan A and some lusty hitting at the end from Tom M. In reply, tight bowling particularly from Christian T and Joshua O and all-round excellent fielding restricted our opponents to only 101 and sealed the win.
Senior Girls v Cranleigh
On Saturday 10 June the Lancing Girls’ 1st XI took on the Cranleigh 2nd XI. Lancing won the toss and elected to bat. They amassed 74 from their allotted 20 overs, with notable batting from Harriet B who carried the Lancing innings against a fast and penetrative Cranleigh bowling attack. Cranleigh were equally assertive with the bat, but Lancing checked their progress on several occasions with wickets from accurate bowling, Darcy H being the pick.
Cranleigh reached the total with 6 overs to spare, winning by 7 wickets.
Junior Girls v Worth (Tuesday)
Lancing loss by 8 runs
U14A v Seaford (Friday) Lords Taverners Quarter Final
Lancing 149 for 5: Alex Giddings (67)
Seaford 95 All out: 2 wickets each for Gethin W, Sam W & Emily S

Tennis
Last Saturday the Tennis Club took on Eastbourne College in their block fixture.
The Senior boys and girls took the clean sweep with the 1st team boys and girls winning 5-4 each, and the 2nd team boys taking a confident 8-1 victory.
The U15 boys and girls also had a terrific day, with the boys’ 15As winning 6-3 and the 15Bs following suit with another 6-3 win.
The 15A girls had a closer day of it but still walked away victorious with a 5-4 win, and the 15B girls dropped only 1 set to take an 8-1 win.
It was a tougher day for the U14 boys and girls who, despite putting in a solid shift away at Eastbourne, struggled to adapt to the fast, low playing Astro.
The newly formed 14Bs however had a cracking day and played some really close matches, and eventually took a 5-4 win to claim their first victory.
MVPs were awarded to Nadiya L and Hana C from the Junior girls.
Hot off the press… The U15 boys played their final LTA league match on Thursday, against Hurst. Strong performances from Loui G, Sutirith K, Shimon M and Gonzalo E R enabled the boys to secure 4 out of 6 wins to confirm their place at the top of their County League. The Lancing College U15 A and B boys’ teams now face each other in the final knockout stages of the Year 9 & 10 Youth Schools’ Tournament with the winning team progressing through to play regionals in October.
