Equestrian news
The College Equestrian Team was in action at Hickstead over the Bank Holiday Weekend at the Eventers’ Challenge National Championships. The challenge involves jumping a course of show jumps followed immediately by a long series of cross-country elements including fences, banks, steps, ditches and a lake.
Teams from all over the UK had battled to qualify at regional events during the season and the Lancing team qualified at both 80cm and 90cm competitions, with Islay L also qualifying individually for both. After a long day of competition on Sunday, with 48 teams taking part, Lancing registered a fantastic 4th place finish in the 80cm championship, with Islay achieving 7th place overall in the individual standings (for context, the winners from Barnard Castle School had a round trip of over 600 miles to compete).
Team: Islay L, Tom M, Indigo A, Grace H and India M.
Athletics
Two of our athletes have achieved medals from the Diamond League just before half term at the K2 in Crawley. James D received the bronze for his efforts on the high jump, clearing an impressive 185cm. Joe F also took bronze for the 800m Senior Boys’ race.
We reflect on what a fantastic afternoon the Festival of Athletics was to behold on Founder’s Day. We were delighted to see the number of students from all Houses and year groups participating in the various track events as well as the high jump. Everyone should be hugely proud of their efforts and in particular in front of such a big crowd.
There was a real buzz throughout the afternoon and the positive support and encouragement from peers, parents, staff and guests certainly helped achieve the 20 new records that were set. Those who broke records were Sienna R, Claire M, Annabel J, Megan T, Grace H, Eva B, Emily S, Mia J, Grace S, Max W, Max S, Lucus B, Luca C, Nana O-N, Mark McD, Michael M and Joshua O. Congratulations to all involved.
Girls’ Football
In a tightly fought encounter on Tuesday this week, the U15A team footballers narrowly lost 2-1 to Lingfield. Lara C opened the scoring after an excellent run and finish from inside the box. Resolute defending from Skye L and Ava S, as well as some excellent goalkeeping from India M, allowed Lancing to hold a one goal lead at half time. Lingfield started the second half strongly and bounced back with two early goals to take the lead. Despite late pressure and chances for Lancing, Lingfield held firm to take the victory 2-1. Player of the match – Skye L.
The girls eagerly await the return of House Football on Tuesday afternoon next week. After Sankey’s success last year, we are excited to see which House will take home this year’s trophy.
Tennis
On Tuesday the U15A boys and girls took on Steyning Grammar School in their final round of the LTA Youth Schools Tournament.
A clean sweep by Julian N, Ben A, Austin J and Logan B saw the Lancing boys take a confident 12-0 win over Steyning, with the girls also securing a well-deserved 8-4 win, with both Kitty H and Hattie P winning their singles and doubles in straight sets and Amelia P battling through her singles to take the overall win. Both teams finish top of their leagues and now progress through to the knockout stages. Lancing also have a 2nd U15 team who face Hurst next week and if they win, will also progress through to the knockout stages to join the others.
MVPs are awarded to Austin J and Hattie P for their individual performances throughout the day.
