Sporting Highlights – Friday 14 October 2022
Hockey
Our weekend fixture vs Seaford saw the U14As and U15Bs travel away to play.
The U14As played well in what was a highly competitive match despite the 3-0 loss. A debut for many of our players in the A team this weekend, with some students away representing the school in the National Netball tournament. Player of the match was awarded to Polly E.
The 15Bs produced the game opener and took the lead 1-0 at half time. The hosts came back strong in the second half with the game ending 2-1 in Seaford’s favour, but a brilliant effort and a big well done to the U14s that played up a year. Player of the match was Bella B.
The 2nd XI played at home and, from the outset, the level of teamwork produced was excellent. The girls were all very vocal on the pitch which made for a strong defence in the first half. The opposition voted Kitty H player of the match, with praise to Grace M in goal making some superb saves, despite the 3-1 score line to going to Seaford.
Our midweek match on Tuesday saw our U15A team taking on Roedean’s U16Bs here at the College. This was a fantastic game for the U15s as they controlled possession for most of the match and scored three well worked team goals giving Lancing the 3-0 win. Our 15As remain the most successful team so far this term, with player of the match going to Kitty H.
Running
We had five runners take part in the Worthing 10K on Sunday. This is one of the top 10K races in the South with some top runners competing from running clubs throughout the South.
Grace S did really well to come 4th in the U17 girls category in a time of 45:09 in her first race over this distance. Finn S finished an impressive 20th overall out of well over 1,000 runners, coming in first in his category of U17 boys and running a time of 35:26, in his first race over this distance. A big well done to staff members Mr Footman, Mr Brookes and Dr Bustin, who also took part in the race.
Luca C also took part in the mile race coming 7th out of 54 runners in a very respectable time of 6:18.
Badminton
Last Tuesday, the Lancing Senior Girls Badminton team travelled to Brighton University to play their first fixture against Brighton College.
They had a strong start by winning the first 4 games, by a close competitive margin. As the match continued the girls filled themselves with loads of confidence and dominated the rest of the match by winning a clean sweep of 16-0. Our team consisted of Connie W, Nam S, Kristy W , Shanna J, Ally Y, Alysha H, Anjail B and Tiffany X.
Golf
George G, James S and Tom S won their golf games against Ardingly last week, taking Lancing to the next round of the ISGA competition.
Netball
Despite being in our pre-season term of Netball, our U18s and U16s travelled to East Grinstead last Saturday for the National Netball tournament.
The U16s had a tough start to the day, facing the age group overall winners Hurst. With six out of 10 members of the squad playing up at least one year group it was impressive to see our girls’ effort and resilience throughout the entire tournament. There was much to celebrate as they improved throughout the day. Player of the tournament was awarded to Mimi W.
Our 18s had wins against Mayfield and Sackville Schools and narrowly lost by only one goal to Eastbourne and Roedean. Players of the match for the U18s were Lulu B and Isabella H.
The future certainly looks bright and we are all excited for our term of netball.
Football
In a disappointing weekend, Lancing failed to win a single match over a tough weekend block of fixtures. Despite competitive draws and good performances from the 1st and 2nd teams, the Juniors struggled in difficult matches against strong opponents from Winchester College.
Following the weekend’s matches, the 1st XI were in action again on Thursday in the second round of the ISFA Cup. Despite going behind early, they bounced back to win the game 3-1. Goals from Henry H, Will B and Jamie C completed an emphatic win and progression into the third round. A tough away draw against Hampton School awaits Lancing and following progression in the ISFA and ESFA Cups, the 1st XI are in a fantastic position heading into the second half of term.
Team of the week: 1st Team; Player of the Week: Will B.
