Physical Education & Sports
Introduction
At Lancing Prep Worthing, Physical Education and Games are central to developing happy, healthy and confident pupils. Our broad and balanced curriculum encourages every child to enjoy sport and physical activity, fostering lifelong healthy habits. Through links with Science, pupils deepen their understanding of nutrition and wellbeing, reinforced by assemblies and positive daily routines. Together, these experiences support both physical and mental health and help pupils build strong foundations for the future.
Aims
The Lancing Prep Worthing Physical Education curriculum aims to:
- Develop cooperation, teamwork and positive attitudes towards competition, rooted in fairness, respect and sportsmanship.
- Promote and model safe and responsible practice in all physical activities.
- Encourage physical activity, physical development and the adoption of a healthy lifestyle.
- Ensure equal opportunities for all pupils, regardless of ability or previous experience.
- Provide clear pathways for pupils to strive for personal excellence and reach their full potential.
- Foster enjoyment, confidence and a sense of achievement in sport, inspiring pupils to use their leisure time actively.
- Nurture resilience, leadership, communication and teamwork skills that transfer into all areas of school life.
Teaching Approach
All pupils are taught by specialist PE teachers, ensuring high‑quality teaching, consistency and clear progression. Lessons focus on the major sports, with an increasing emphasis on advanced skills, tactical awareness and performance analysis as pupils move up the school. This provision is further strengthened by specialist coaches from Lancing College, and pupils benefit from access to senior school facilities to enhance their learning and experience.
In Reception and Year 1, pupils develop core foundations in movement, balance, coordination, spatial awareness and basic games skills. These skills support confidence, teamwork and creative expression, preparing pupils for more formal sport.
In Year 2, pupils refine their techniques, begin to understand simple tactics and learn to evaluate performance. They apply skills with greater accuracy and independence.
In Years 3 and 4, pupils build agility, balance and coordination through modified games, athletics and gymnastics. They improve consistency in core skills and develop basic attacking and defending principles.
In Years 5 and 6, pupils tackle more complex skills, apply tactics in game situations and evaluate their performance with growing maturity.
In Years 7 and 8, pupils extend their tactical understanding, fitness knowledge and sport‑specific skills across invasion games, gymnastics, dance and athletics, preparing them for senior school sport.
Prep pupils are grouped into Juniors (Years 3–4) and Seniors (Years 5–8) for dedicated Games afternoons. From Year 3 onwards, pupils take part in fixtures and tournaments, alongside regular house competitions.
Pupils who show enthusiasm and potential are encouraged to take responsibility for their development. They lead warm‑ups, act as role models and develop valuable leadership and captaincy skills.
Enrichment
A wide range of sporting clubs and activities are offered, giving pupils further opportunities to practise skills, discover new interests and celebrate their achievements.
A biennial residential visit to Lodge Hill is offered to pupils in Years 5 and 6. This memorable experience provides access to outdoor and adventurous activities such as climbing, abseiling and quad biking. It plays a key role in developing resilience, independence, teamwork, and confidence, allowing pupils to challenge themselves in a safe and supportive environment.
Together, our PE and Sport provision ensures that every child leaves Lancing Prep Worthing with a positive attitude to physical activity, strong sporting values, and the confidence to lead an active, healthy lifestyle.
