The Grounds Department

The Grounds and Garden Department, under the leadership of the Grounds and Garden Manager, is responsible for the maintenance and upkeep of the grounds, gardens, playing fields and sports surfaces at all three schools.

 

The Appointment

The school is looking to recruit a Part-Time Groundsperson to primarily undertake all aspects of gardening and grounds duties at the Prep School in Worthing.

Job Title:                    Part-Time Groundsperson

Reporting to:              Head, Grounds and Garden Manager

 

Key Responsibilities:

  • To carry out routine gardening and grounds maintenance work of lawns, boarders, hedges, playing surfaces and landscape as directed by the Grounds and Gardening Manager or Deputy.
  • To create, mark out and set up of playing surfaces in readiness for lessons and matches.
  • To ensure the safe use and operation of equipment and machinery used in gardens and grounds maintenance.
  • To inform the Grounds and Garden Manager or Deputy, where appropriate, to take corrective action on mechanical defects or breakdown of equipment.
  • To observe and comply with the Health and Safety policy and code of practice for staff.
  • To assist with the upkeep of selected beds, borders and shrubbery areas, hedges, lawns and the like to assist with garden planning and planting works.
  • To assist with general upkeep of the grounds, picking up litter and collecting leaves and other debris.
  • To ensure the security of the outbuildings such as pavilions and garages where equipment is stored, remembering to unlock and lock at the appropriate times.
  • To keep roads and pathways clear of snow and treat with rock salt as and when required.

 

Skills and Qualifications:

Essential

  • Experience using mowers, hedge cutters, strimmer, tractors and other grounds machinery.
  • Hold a full, clean UK Driving Licence.
  • Understand relevant and current health and safety legislation as well as industry legislation.
  • Possess technical knowledge of industry standards and resources.
  • Ability to work to a high standard, think ahead and generate ideas.

 

Desirable

  • Experience of working within a school environment.
  • Experience marketing sports pitches.

Terms and Conditions:

  • Hours of work are 22.5 hours per week to be worked Tuesday, Thursday and Friday 7.30am – 4.00pm with one-hour unpaid lunch break.
