Sporting Highlights – 24 September 2021
We start by congratulating Izzy H (Third Form) who played in her first major Silver Squash Event since March 2020, last weekend. Izzy was seeded 5/8 in this competition and successfully defeated the 3/4 seed by 3 games to nil in the quarter finals. She went on to lose to the first seed in the semi-final, and finished third overall. This is fantastic news Izzy – well done!
Good luck to Max W and Grace S who are both running in the Sussex County Cross Country Relays at Goodwood on Saturday. Max is racing for Crawley Athletics, and Grace for Worthing Harriers.
Football
We have had an exceptionally busy second week of football with approximately 150 footballers taking to the pitch last Saturday against Bede’s. Huge promise was shown in what, for many, was their first ever appearance in Lancing colours.
Team of the week was our 5th XI who successfully defeated Bede’s 3-1 in a tightly fought encounter. An incredible strike gave Lancing the lead when goalkeeper Ben C lobbed the Bede’s keeper from inside his own half. Lancing’s Max W completed the scoring late on.
There were mixed fortunes in the National Cup games. A resilient performance from our U15s resulted in a narrow 2-1 loss to Patcham High School. However, our 1st team progressed into the second round with an impressive 5-0 victory away to Box Hill.
It was also pleasing to see pupils from our Fourth, Fifth and Sixth Forms attend National representative trials at Eton College last Sunday; we eagerly await the outcome of their performances.
Star player of the week for his all-round performance in the 5th XI victory goes to Sam W.
Hockey
This week Lancing have played 10 games with over 100 girls competing in fixtures. It was excellent to have the juniors playing their first games for Lancing and hopefully playing many more in the future.
The 1st team narrowly missed out on a win against Hurst, losing 3-2, but really piled on the pressure in the second half with Pia V W standing out with the performance of the season so far.
The U15A team got their first win of the season against Roedean on Monday with a 1-0 win in the final minute.
And finally, the team of the week goes to the U14A team who missed out on the County Finals Day through goal difference, but played exceptionally well, drawing to Hurst 1-1 and beating Worth 4-3.
