Head Master’s Welcome – January 2022
Yesterday evening we were delighted to welcome Daniel Mendoza OBE (Sanderson’s 1982–1986) to the College. Part of our rolling series of Head Master’s Lectures, the subject of Daniel’s talk was Standing on the Shoulders of Giants. He is the Chair of The Anne Frank Trust and it was thus particularly apt that he could join us on Holocaust Memorial Day. A very personal talk, this was a combination of Lancing memories and a spur to remember that all of us – no matter what our age and place in society – have a duty to take a stand against prejudice, injustice, and hatred. If you were unable to join the live stream you will find a link to the recording in this newsletter.
Charity fundraising, the Inter-House Music Competition and a newly energised League Run (where the competition is already fierce), and a building sense of momentum towards Sustainability Week are already proving the hallmarks of the term. However, and understandably and rightly, the mood in the College remains somewhat subdued in the aftermath of the tragic news of our former pupil Oisin’s unexpected death. For his year group in particular there has been a keen sense of loss. For the next two weeks a corner of the Chapel has been set aside with photos of Oisin, some of his artwork, and for his friends to share their memories of him. Our prayers in this week’s services, including a special eucharist attended by many of his friends, have been focused on Oisin and his family. They will all remain in our thoughts in the days and weeks to come.
