Football
On Thursday last week the U16A team travelled to Hereford for an ESFA National Cup Semi-final versus Kingstone High School. With several hundred supporters loudly chanting for the home team it was a nervy and tense environment for those taking part. However, Lancing showed incredible courage, to take an early lead through Francis R, before the hosts drew level just before half-time to set up an exciting second half.
Lancing were first to score, after Jude G calmly slotted a penalty home to take a 2-1 lead and Patrick C extended the lead after getting in behind the Kingstone defence to make it 3-1. Yet, the hosts were not finished and brought the match back to 3-2 with 15 minutes to play. Lancing stood strong and withstood an onslaught of pressure up until the last minute when a header from Kingstone crashed against the crossbar and back down into the box; Kingstone reacted first, but Elliot G was there to clear the ball off the line and away from danger. As the ball was clear Patrick C carried it from midway inside his own half, beating four players to score and win the match 4-2. The celebrations started and Lancing were through – elation for all involved, they had done it.
From 107 teams, Lancing have now progressed to a final after Easter at the Bet 365 Stadium. The 30,000-seater stadium of EFL Championship side Stoke City will host the final and will be a fantastic experience for those involved. A huge congratulations to the team; let’s hope they can go one step further and become NATIONAL CHAMPIONS!
Tennis
On Wednesday, it finally felt as though summer was on the horizon as the Girls’ 1st Team Tennis took on Eastbourne in the first round of the National Aberdare Cup. With both singles and doubles matches played as best of three sets, everything was in place for a fantastic afternoon of competitive tennis.
Coco M set the standard early, defeating Eastbourne’s number one player in straight sets. Hattie P followed with a hardfought three set victory against her opponent. Although Amelia P and Olivia M narrowly missed out in their singles matches, both competed with real determination and intent. As a result, the teams were tied 4–4 heading into the second round doubles.
With only two doubles matches remaining, Lancing needed to win both to secure an outright victory – anything less would mean elimination or a decisive 10 point shootout. As play unfolded, it became clear the latter was likely. Olivia and Hattie were edged out in their doubles match, leaving Amelia and Coco needing a win to keep Lancing in the competition. Drawing on their experience, the pair rose to the occasion, battling to a 6–2, 7–6 victory, clinching the tiebreak 7–3 and forcing a nailbiting shootout.
With momentum, experience, and a strong tactical team talk behind them, Coco and Hattie stepped up for the final match of the day. Hattie’s consistent and reliable baseline play, combined with Coco’s dominant performance at the net, left Eastbourne shellshocked. The result was a resounding 10–5 shootout victory for Lancing, securing progression to the quarterfinals, where the team will face Bede’s in April.
