Curtain Raiser: Table for Thirteen

This year’s Curtain Raiser production kicked off the dramatic year with an absolute triumph. OL Charlie Cooper’s Table for Thirteen (winner of the 2016 Bancroft One Act Playwriting competition) is a sharp, laugh-out-loud comedy, which can be summed up in three words: witty, engaging, (and surprisingly) thought-provoking.

The chemistry between the actors was the engine of the show, every performer bringing something to the stage. Pippa’s commanding presence as an imperious waitress set the plot in motion. Bartholomew was a wonderfully innocent, yet deeply comedic, character and Ryley brought great charm to his performance. Casper (Andrew) provided a vital anchor for the production, delivering a steady and reliable performance, letting the surrounding madness shine.

Monty played Philip’s character brilliantly: his straight-faced seriousness and fierce unwillingness to defy Jesus were hilarious. Albie’s performance as Judas was an absolute showstopper, creating an eruption of laughter after every line, capturing the character perfectly, squaring up to his colleagues with swagger and confidence. Joe (Peter) did a superb job of holding the entire dynamic together, the crucial centre point of trying to manage all the group’s frantic energy whilst in denial himself.

The fantastic performances on stage were matched by brilliant work behind the scenes. The sharp direction, smooth technical management, atmospheric lighting and sound combined seamlessly to sustain the frantic momentum.

Ultimately, Table for Thirteen was a fabulous success and a fantastic Curtain Raiser. The balance of intellectual depth and comedy made it a memorable night at the theatre. 5 stars!
