Music
Music at Lancing Prep Hove
Music plays a vibrant and valued part in life at Lancing Prep Hove. Through our rich and inclusive Music curriculum, pupils develop a deep appreciation of a wide range of musical styles and learn to listen with curiosity, sensitivity and understanding. Active participation in music‑making – whether singing, playing, composing or performing – helps children build confidence and discover the enjoyment that comes from creative expression.
Making music together is an especially important part of what we do. Working in groups and ensembles enables pupils to develop teamwork, a sense of shared identity and the confidence to contribute to something larger than themselves. Alongside this, Music nurtures key personal qualities such as self‑discipline, creativity and aesthetic awareness, helping children grow as well‑rounded, expressive individuals.
Our Curriculum
Our Music curriculum introduces pupils to a broad variety of musical traditions, genres and techniques. As they listen, explore and respond to music, children learn to form thoughtful judgements about what they hear and develop the skills needed to become confident young musicians. Through hands‑on involvement in both individual and group music‑making, pupils experience the fulfilment that comes from commitment, practice and creativity.
Our Teaching Approach
All pupils are taught by specialist music teachers who bring enthusiasm, expertise and a love of music to every lesson. Class music sessions offer children the opportunity to play, compose and perform, allowing them to explore different musical styles and develop their individual talents.
Performance is an important part of school life, and every pupil takes part in musical events at least once each year. Many pupils also choose to learn an instrument with our peripatetic teachers and enjoy joining the school’s ensembles, where they make music alongside friends who share their interests.
A wide range of concerts, musical evenings and performance opportunities (both in school and beyond) feature regularly in our calendar, giving pupils the chance to showcase their skills and take pride in their achievements.
Pupils demonstrate strong musicality, accurately applying knowledge of rhythm, pace and pitch, when singing and playing percussion instruments.
