Eastside Young Leaders (EYLA) Summer School 2025
The week before the start of term, Lancing hosted the annual EYLA Summer Camp for twenty-one young students aged 10-14 years. Eastside’s aim is to create leaders of character and purpose for tomorrow’s world, drawn from those most in need in grassroots communities.
EYLA has been a key partner in Lancing’s Foundationer programme since it began in 2017, to date nine Eastside students have become OLs and two new students will be joining Lancing this year.
The summer camp was initially developed to help young EYLA students in the immediate post-covid year, it is now in its sixth year and a fixed part of the partnership calendar; the week is greatly anticipated by staff and students alike. The programme is designed to inspire students with academic lessons, give them the opportunity to spend time outdoors in the spaciousness of the Lancing campus and experience boarding school.
This year the Summer School was especially significant as students were welcomed by Dr Scott Crawford, our new Head Master, in his first week at Lancing.
Students experienced a wide range of activities and lessons across the week including:
- Reading for fun
- Debating
- Building a rocket
- Foraging and cooking
- Maths
- Languages
- Electronics – designing a speaker to take home
- Drama
- Starting to build your CV and transferable skills
- Politics and philosophy
- Walking to the beach
- A formal dinner
- Treasure hunt
“A highlight of every year is our EYLA camp and this year was no exception. It was fabulous to meet such engaging, curious and enthusiastic young people. Their energy was contagious and all staff who came into contact with them commented on how delighted they were to welcome them to Lancing.
We would like to thank the many staff involved in welcoming EYLA students and staff with our usual Lancing warmth. Several teachers were doing for this for the first time, and I know they have been inspired to get involved again next year.”
Ms Anne McKane, Head of Foundationers
