Chris Riddell visits Lancing Prep Worthing

The children had a super morning when Chris Riddell, author & illustrator, came to visit. The older children were fascinated to see his fabulous characters spring to life before their very eyes on the Hall smartboard, as he spoke during assembly. They heard all about how he began his career and then asked questions, which he also illustrated in real time while giving the answers!  He finished with a reading from his brand-new story, Tiggy Thistle & the Guardians.

Next, Chris read one of his books for younger children, Once Upon a Wild Wood, to our Nursery, Pre-School, Reception and Year 1 children. They behaved beautifully and sat on the Reception class carpet, enthralled by the tale of Green and her journey through the fairy tale wood. He began his book signing duties for them before moving to our library for a veritable marathon signing session for the older children. The children asked lots of questions and showed him the pictures they had made as part of the challenge to draw his characters for themselves.

It was heartening to see so many books had been bought for the children by their parents, ranging from Christmas poems to his Cloud Horse Chronicles. His personal attention to every child as he signed their books was so very much appreciated. Some Year 8 pupils  requested an 'off the cuff' political cartoon to adorn the poetry books they had bought. These are now treasured possessions!

Right at the end of the morning, the Year 2 children were treated to an impromptu reading from Hugo Pepper, one of Chris’ classic collaborations with Paul Stewart.

We can’t thank him enough for a wonderful morning that will live long in the memories of children and staff!
