World Book Day 2024 at LPW

This year, our World Book Day celebrations have extended over a month rather than just one day! We started with a visit from the inspirational author Vashti Hardy, who came to share her enthusiasm for writing stories with all our children. This inspired many of our pupils to create their own worlds, as she does at the start of each novel, to build an imaginary location for storytelling. This led to some highly creative ‘Door Decorations’ as part of our half-term creative WBD challenge. Thank you to all the children who submitted their thoughtful and imaginative artwork for this competition. Many congratulations to our winning entries; Eva M (Year 8) for her design of Alice in Wonderland, Skantha N-R (Year 6) for her design of Midnight Gang, and Jasper S (Year 3) for his Podkin book design.

From Nursery to Year 8, all our children dressed as characters from their favourite books and enjoyed taking part in the parade in the playground. Several teachers particularly enjoyed being ‘Where’s Wally.’ Can you spot them in the picture above?

Our passion for reading for pleasure permeates every year group in the school, every day. However, WBD gave all our children the opportunity to choose a new book to read for pleasure.

The ‘Don’t Judge a Book by Its Cover’ activity involved all pupils doing lots of ‘stealth’ reading as they read the ‘blurb’ for lots of books that had been wrapped in newspapers for their year group. Then each pupil chose a book that they wanted to keep. This activity was made possible by the generosity of our parental donations and the remarkable ‘wrapping power’ of the LPWA. Thank you to everyone who helped with this.

Some pupils also thought about ways of linking modern foreign languages with World Book Day and created some beautiful book marks for their favourite books in another language. We think they are wonderful!

The kitchen put on a fabulous ‘Charlie and the Chocolate Factory’ themed lunch for the children. Favourites were the Augustus Gloop sausages and the chocolate fountain with dipping fruit skewers.

We are pleased to announce the winners from our World Book Month library competition are Maxwell C (Year 4) and Beau H (Year 6).
