Health Centre

Lancing has a well-equipped and state of the art Health Centre. Open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week and staffed by a team of six qualified Sisters with well over 100 years of nursing experience between them. The Health Centre offers comprehensive health care in the event of illness or accident and emergency, to boarders and day pupils alike.

One thing we all have in common is that we are all mothers. We know how we would like our children to be cared for, and we strive to reach that standard at all times. We all enjoy working with adolescents and enjoy trying to solve the conundrums and puzzles with which they often present.

All boarding pupils are registered with the College's medical officers and doctors' surgeries are held at the Health Centre four times a week. In addition, the Health Centre drives healthy living initiatives, working with pupils on awareness of the importance of a good diet, physical fitness and how to lead safe and healthy lives. As well as number of clinics each day which allow pupils to self-refer, the Health Centre also works closely with Houses to provide health and pastoral care for all pupils.

The Centre is open between 7am and 10pm; however there is always at least one Sister on duty overnight. Staff normally see between 20 and 50 pupils a day. During induction periods when staff are also seeing new pupils to introduce them to the Health Centre and carry out basic height, weight and colour blindness tests, it can reach as many as 130 a day.

Day to day work in the Centre is very varied and our experienced team take their position very seriously. Young people away from home can find illness difficult to cope with, therefore the Health Centre team treat each person as an individual, assess their needs, offer appropriate support whether it be reassurance, medication or rest in the Health Centre.

The Health Centre is an oasis for some pupils. Living in close contact, attending sports fixture, choir, play rehearsals, and of course maintaining an academic standard and meeting deadlines, can all take their toll; our team is in the position to offer support, advice or even a quiet and calm area in which to rest, recuperate and recharge.

With the wide variety of sport and activities on offer here at Lancing, the Health Centre sees a fair number of sports injuries; fortunately a very good physiotherapist visits the Health Centre twice a week.

In addition to the daily running of the Health Centre, the team works very closely with The Senior Deputy Head to ensure that they are aware of any pupils who may be feeling overburdened, tired or anxious.
