A Level Selection

Changes to the Lancing Week were implemented in 2016 to optimise the effectiveness of the school day at Lancing and to make the best of the teaching and learning opportunities of our pupils.

Our specialist Sixth Form staff and tutors work with pupils individually during the Fifth Form to start to consider A Level options, these are finalised after GCSEs. Lancing encourages pupils to choose four subject options at A Level, with/without an Extended Project Qualification.

The Sixth Form Choice 2019 booklet provides information about each subject, and the course requirements.

Below is the blocking system from 2018–2019 which indicates the A Level (plus BTEC and Pre-U) subject offerings in the Sixth Form:

  • Further Mathematics (Block C) must be accompanied by Mathematics (Block D)
  • Sport BTEC has to be taken as a two A Level equivalent, ie in Blocks B and D
  • Business BTEC is a one A Level equivalent

During the penultimate Fifth Form term pupils make provisional A Level subject selections.
This information informs the blocking system, which changes slightly each year.

We know that results day can be an anxious time. The College has prepared a quick guide with recommendations on what to do on the day.

A short guide to a level results day

Pupils in the Sixth Form are well-served by knowledgeable teachers who have high expectations and an infectious enthusiasm for their subjects. Results at A Level in 2016 indicate pupils make excellent progress, with over half of grades achieved at A* or A.
