Introduction
Lancing opened its Equestrian Centre in Spring 2017 within the grounds of the College. Located just a short walk from the school's main buildings, the Centre is open for use by our pupils and also the wider local community.
The Centre offers riding for all abilities and stabling for up to twenty horses. Riding is offered as part of co-curricular activity, an important part of life at Lancing where the weekly school timetable ensures time for pupils to take advantage of a wide range of opportunities and at the same time achieve academic success. In addition to the stables, there is also a 40m x 20m all-weather arena, and bridleway access to superb riding in the South Downs National Park.
The Centre is open seven days a week and pupils can ride as often as they are able, dependent on their other activities and availability at the Centre. Typically, a member of the riding team rides at least three times a week with extra sessions available at the weekend. The Assistant Head (Co-Curricular) works closely with the staff at the Centre to enable this to happen wherever possible.
The Centre is run by our partner, Mrs Jan Tupper on behalf of the College for both our pupils and external customers; her experience and ideas have played an essential part in its success. Jan owns and runs the business, Lancing Equestrian Limited, and parents are billed directly by her for both livery and riding.
About the Equestrian Centre
Lancing pupils of all abilities can take advantage of the new Equestrian Centre:
- Expert riding tuition from dedicated, specialist staff
- Group lessons with other pupils of similar ability, either on their own horse or one of the Centre’s horses
- Individual, private lessons for pupils working towards a specific goal, eg competition training, GCSE Physical Education riding assessment preparation
- Dressage, show jumping and cross-country clinics
- Stable management and British Horse Society Examination Training.
The Centre will support and actively encourage students to work towards nationally recognised awards, such as the British Horse Society Stage 1 examination.
Horse and Pony loan scheme
This will be available to pupils who aspire to owning their own horse. The scheme will allow pupils who have attained a good standard of riding and horse care to have access to a horse, on a shared basis, as if it were their own, all under the supervision and support of the Lancing College Equestrian Centre staff.
For more information and availability, please contact Amy Baker, Equestrian Centre Director, on 01903 763815.
Enrichment and Extension
The Equestrian Centre has also provided an additional and valuable resource for pupils considering careers in biology, veterinary sciences and also ecology.
We appreciate that pupils have busy schedules for both academic study and co-curricular activities. In order to enable them to spend quality time with their horse while embracing other aspects of College life, the Lancing College Equestrian Centre offers a choice of livery packages which can be tailored to suit individual requirements and existing commitments.
For more information and availability, please contact Amy Baker, Equestrian Centre Director, on 01903 763815.
The Equestrian Centre is also available to the wider community and provides horse riding for all abilities, plus stabling for up to 20 horses. As an approved British Horse Society Riding Centre and Livery Yard, Lancing Equestrian is able to offer expert riding tuition, livery services and stable management activities.
