Professor John Dancy, 1920-2019 (December 2019)

John Dancy

Lancing has lost its former Head Master, John Dancy, at the grand age of 99. John died in the afternoon on Saturday 28 December 2019.

John was Head Master from 1953-1961. John's route into education came as a result of his experiences during the war in 1944. He reflected on his involvement with the capture of the Hitler Youth Division and this determined his future career - he decided to dedicate his life to ‘teaching with the emphasis on thinking for oneself and questioning authority’. Lancing benefited significantly from this decision. John is remembered fondly by many OLs and his contribution to the College was both widely respected and played an important role in its future success. There is no doubt that his influence and leadership will remain as a lasting legacy in the school’s history.

John's obituary can be found on the Telegraph website, published on 16 January 2020 (you need to be a subsciber to read the full obituary) -  https://www.telegraph.co.uk/obituaries/2020/01/16/john-dancy-classicist-reform-minded-headmaster-1968-admitted/
