Sporting Highlights - 28 January 2022

Congratulations to our 1st VI Basketball team who beat Michael Hall this week 46-36. We began the first half as the weaker team with too many unforced errors, however Kavan L’s on point shooting made a few deep 3s to give the team momentum and go strong into the second half. The defensive trio of James D, Sam B and Louis J-Q stood strong, keeping Michael Hall from scoring and getting easy rebounds. Desmond T scored 35 points with ten 3 pointers – 4 away from the NBA record!

The next home match is Tuesday 8 February, against Bede's.

On Wednesday the Lancing Tennis Club was in action all afternoon, competing in the LTA Year 11-13 Senior Schools Tournament.

After 12 matches both the Senior Boys' and Girls' teams finished in a well-respected second place in their group, having beaten Rikkyo 10-2 (Senior Girls) and 8-4 (Senior Boys), but unfortunately we lost out to a tough Eastbourne College side, 12-0 (Senior Girls) and 7-6 (Senior Boys).

Highlights of the day included the boys' 10-point shootout final, where Dan T and William P stepped up to compete for the overall win against Eastbourne College. After drawing 6-6 in the singles and doubles, the boys played a very close, competitive tie break to 10 points where, despite some fantastic serving and volleying from the Lancing duo, they narrowly missed out losing 10-7.

Special mention also goes to William P who played his second tiebreak of the day in his final singles match against Rikkyo, this time playing with even more grit and determination, and refusing to give in. Having gone done 5-3 in the first set, William fought back to 5-5, then 6-6, where he then found himself playing yet another tie-break – this time to take the win for Lancing.

A really positive day of tennis by both the Senior Boys and Senior Girls. Well done to all who took part.

Our Junior Netball teams were in action this week with the U15s playing away at Seaford College in the first round of the cup. There were some great moments of play from the young team but Seaford’s attack was just too strong, resulting in us being knocked out of the competition. Lancing's Most Valuable Player was Claire M.

The 14As and 15Bs played away at Shoreham College. The 14As played in a tough first match of the season struggling to find their form; they started to improve as the game went on but couldn’t close the gap.

The 15Bs were outstanding and demonstrated their dominance from the start. With great ball movement, and sharp shooting from Bryony A and Grace S, the team gained a huge lead which Shoreham College could never recover.
The final score was 22-1.
