Sporting Highlights - End of Lent Term 2023

Swimming
Lancing swimmers travelled to London Aquatic centre on the Friday EXEAT for the prestigious National Bath Cup competition with over 100 schools competing. In the Boys' Aldenham Cup 4x100 Freestyle relay Archie N, James R and Alessio M swam their fastest ever 100m swims to help Isaac B – our youngest swimmer – bring home Silver for the team on the final leg.

In the Dunelm Cup 4x50m Medley relay the boys qualified for the final in 6th position. Lancing then played its ace card, swimming Ethan G on the final leg, who almost took Lancing to first place. We had to settle for Silver by the closest of margins 0.19 secs, to Leys School. This was the last Bath Cup for James, Archie and Ethan.

Mia J, Bella B, Grace W and Jorja S swam in the girls 4x50m Medley and Freestyle Otter Cup relays. Valiant effort from the girls who missed finals but said they thoroughly enjoyed the day and experience gained. Certainly, one of the most memorable Bath Cup competitions Lancing has competed in since last winning the boys 4x100m in 2010, and excellent effort and team spirit shared by all.

Hockey
Our U18 1st XI took on Worth at home over the weekend with a squad of Upper Sixth leavers, for their last hockey fixture together. Unsurprisingly the team approached their final game for Lancing with fantastic energy and cruised to a comfortable 3-0 win, with goals from Jamie C, Nana O-N and Brook L.

Our U15A and U15B travelled away to Worth in what proved to be a very competitive encounter for the Lancing boys. As with the U18s, both 15s teams played some excellent hockey to achieve 3 wins out of 3 matches. The U15As won 2-1 with goals from Austin J and Rory H, and the Bs won 1-0 with Josh C-J scoring the winning goal.

House Hockey
The highly anticipated Senior event did not disappoint, with goals aplenty and some terrific saves in penalty shoot outs. The final standings from the event were as follows:

  • 3rd place Gibbs'
  • 2nd place 2 Heads'
  • Winners in 1st place were School House

Cross-Country: League run (final race Friday 17 March)

We had a terrific series of League Runs this term, with well over 1,000 loops of the famous old course being completed during the term. We had some absolutely wonderful times at the front of the races, particularly by the boys who ran times we had never seen before in the 40 years' history of the League Run, culminating in a new course record for Fin S. The team competitions were close right up to the final race but in the end, the results for the House competitions went as follows.

Boys' House Competition

  • 1st – Seconds's
  • 2nd – Teme
  • 3rd – Gibbs'

Girls' House Competition

  • 1st – Manor
  • 2nd – Sankey's
  • 3rd – Saints' (G)

Results and Awards for the annual 5 Mile and 3 Mile Cross-Country runs will be presented at the start of the Summer Term.

Football
The 1st and 2nd XI were in action last Wednesday against Westminster with their final matches in the Elgin League. Despite a very close 3-2 loss for the 2nd XI, the 1st XI won comfortably 3-0 with a dominant display. Two goals from Jamie C and one for Henry H secured victory and top spot for table-topping Lancing. Having won their last three matches in a tough group, we are extremely proud of their achievement. Having won the League, Lancing progressed through to the knockout semi-finals and played Alleyn's School at Lancing Football club yesterday. Unfortunately, it wasn’t our day as the game ended 4-2 to Alleyn's. Despite this result, the boys have so much to be proud of – they have had a fantastic season.

With the last set of weekend fixtures postponed due to waterlogged pitches, it was over to the U15 girls to take centre stage, with a National Cup fixture versus Bede's on Monday. An exceptional performance from the girls saw them run out 5-1 winners for the second time in the competition, in a dominant display showing huge potential. Outstanding performances in defence from Leia P and Skye L as well as goals from Harriet , Lily T, Sophia B and Captain Romily T-J rounded off a superb performance and pathway into Round 3, where Lancing will face Ardingly.

Colours awarded for Football
Half colours to Kwame N-O, Ben C, Joseph K and Joseph E
Full colours to Kavan L and Jamie C

Netball

With a very tough block to finish the season against Portsmouth Grammar School and Seaford at the weekend, the girls put on a valiant display of sportsmanship. With some nail-bitingly close matches, the U14As took the match of the day with a 25-24 loss that could have gone either way. Most Valued Players on the day include Claire M, Grace W, Emily S, Amelia G, Lara N, Grace C, Sara K and Nadia L.

The traditional Staff vs Leavers match was a fiercely competitive fixture, with Ms Edwards maintaining her 12 year winning streak; the staff won 15-5!

Colours for Netball are awarded to:-
Half colours to Mia J, Ellie F-S, Amelie T, Mimi C and Christina M

Full colours to Isabella H, Poppy S, Riva S, Lulu B and Bea J

Basketball
HISTORY HAS BEEN MADE! For the first in Lancing College history, the Senior Basketball Team can officially be crowned as 2022/2023 League champions. They travelled away to face a strong Ardingly team who have been causing upsets throughout the season. Lancing needed to win to ensure that they couldn’t be caught in the league standings, and they did just that. It was a nail-biting affair, and after some clutch plays both on the defensive and offensive ends of the floor, Lancing came away victorious by just one point! Well done boys, and there will be medals to follow.

Fencing
This has been a fantastic term for Lancing College, due mainly to the endeavours and success of James C (Saints' House). Earlier this term he won the South East Regional competition making him the best Under 16 Foil Fencer in the South East of England.
Last Wednesday James competed in the Public Schools' Fencing Championships, a three-day fencing competition for ages 11–18 with fencing at all three weapons. It is the largest competition of its kind in the UK, and has been running since 1890, with hundreds of fencers and many schools competing. James took part in the Junior Boys' Foil competition and was up against more than 94 fencers in his age group.
Across 9 hours fencing James fought really well, and eventually finished equal 3rd.

He ends this term ranked in the GB Cadets team and England Under 23 squad, plus he has qualified for the GB Nationals Under 16 competition which takes place next term.
This is a fantastic result for James and the College, and coach Ron Hale says that 'in over 50 years of coaching Fencing at Lancing this is the best result the College has ever achieved!'

Squash
This has been a very good term for Squash as the sport continues to grow. Our 1st and 2nd teams have won two fixtures against Hurst and played very well against Christ’s Hospital last weekend. Our Junior team has also gained some useful match experience, with some players starting as complete beginners this term. We look forward to seeing more pupils trying out the sport next year.
