Sporting Highlights - End of Summer Term 2023

Tennis
This past week has seen all ten Houses compete for the House tennis titles and with more than 100 students from Third Form to Upper Sixth all pairing up in fancy dress to compete in the annual Junior and Senior Manor Cup mixed doubles tournament.

It is fair to say that the Lancing College fancy dress game remains strong with standout costumes from the following pairs: Sophia B and George W’s 'inflatable sharks' outfit, Harlan E and Romily T-J’s commitment to 'Men in Black' with accompanying music, Jacob D and Amelia G's original take on 'Peanut-butter and Jelly', Ava S and Loui G’s 'cat in the hat', Marnix H and Amelie L 'Shrek and Fiona' lookalike, Alex K and Verity K’s take on 'Ken and Barbie' and not forgetting of course Logan B and Amelia P’s dedication to turning themselves blue as part of their 'Smurfs' disguise.

Further congratulations to Logan B, Amelia P, Julian N and Chloe W for winning the Third and Fourth Form Manor Cup titles, and Thursday saw an epic final in the Senior Manor Cup between Saints' George H & Mimi W and Alex K & Verity K, with Alex & Verity taking the 10-7 win. I would now like to invite Alex and Verity up to come and collect their Senior Manor Cup trophy.

Last Saturday we had a fabulous buzz down at the courts when House Tennis returned. Cricket

Senior Girls
On a gloriously sunny morning the Lancing Girls’ 1st XI took on Eastbourne in their final fixture of the season. Eastbourne, batting first, played with a cut ‘n’ thrust approach from ball one and amassed an impressive 174-2 from their allotted 20 overs. Lancing lost early wickets which prevented them establishing batting momentum and were eventually bowled out with 2 overs to spare. The team finishes the season having played 5, lost 3 and won 2. Mr Mole has been impressed by the commitment to training and matches shown by the squad this year with girls playing, scoring, and even umpiring. The Girls’ Cricket programme continues to gain momentum and will push on to the next stage in the next year.

U14A
Saturday’s game vs Ryde and Upper Chine included a brilliant innings of 68 from Alex G, and a swashbuckling 39 from Gethin W off 26 balls saw Lancing to an impressive 193 from 25 overs. Ryde were never in the hunt as Joseph C took 5-19 including a hat-trick, and Inigo A B with 4-9 off 2.2 overs saw a convincing Lancing victory by 76 runs.

Monday's Lord's Taverners semifinal saw us produce a performance we had – fortunately – never seen before. We could not find the fight and got skittled for 99 with only our final pair putting up a fight. Hurst knocked the runs off with 1 wicket down. Just one of those things.

Overall, the season – excluding the last game – has been a glittering success with the boys really turning into young men on the cricket pitch. They played together, were deeply committed, and found a way to win games that might have been past them in years gone by. Huge wins over Charterhouse, Seaford, Christ's Hospital to name but a few, and only losing to Brighton College on the last ball, was testament to the team’s attitude and that they always 'stayed in the fight'.

1st XI
In last Saturday's fixture v Ryde school, the1st XI bowled out the opposition for 105 with Oscar S, James S and Ozzy R taking 2 wickets each. It only took Lancing 25 overs to reach the total to win by 4 wickets. Oscar E scored a very impressive 44 not out. A very good win.

U14 Girls
On Saturday the Lancing U14 girls took on Eastbourne in their final match of the summer. Batting first, Lancing notched up 104-9 from their 20 overs, with some powerful hitting from captain Emily S backed up by astute batting from Anika M and Grace W further down the order.
Excellent bowling from Tessa O and Emily S saw Eastbourne struggle to get off to a good start, and tight fielding including two run-outs by Polly E meant that the game went into a close finish, with the opposition just edging home in the final couple of overs. It has been exciting to see the girls develop their skills over the summer and we look forward to a productive winter net session again.

Cricket Week
On Monday we played the XL club, and Lancing found this to be a totally different experience. The XL club dominated with the bat scoring 216 for the loss of 8 wickets. George H-H was the pick of the Lancing bowlers taking 4 wickets for 47 runs. With limited time to bat, Lancing started with a very good 1st wicket partnership of 49 (Cosmo P 34 & Max W [captain] 15). The match ended in a draw with Lancing scoring 174 for 4 wickets in reply (Max W scoring a very good 69 with excellent support from Oscar E with an equally impressive 59 not out.

On Tuesday, Lancing took on a very strong MCC team captained by Rob Wakefield OL. The opposition declared on 176 for 7 wickets. The pick of the bowlers was Omar M-A, taking 3 wickets for 28 runs. In reply Lancing were skittled out for 96 runs by a very experienced bowling attack. Omar M-A was awarded the Lancing Player of the match by the MCC captain and received an MCC cap.

Thursday proved to be an even stronger match v Sussex Martlets who scored a very impressive 203 for 6 wickets. George B was Lancing’s pick of the bowlers taking 2 wickets for 39 runs. In reply Lancing found it difficult and were bowled out for 152. Alex Osbourne – a state player visiting the UK from Perth in Australia – bowled a 'Shane Warne-style' leg spin which Lancing found difficult to play against. Ozzy R found some form and top scored with a very good 41 runs.
