EYLA Students enjoy Lancing Summer School

Students from Eastside Young Leaders Enjoy a Three-Day Summer School at Lancing

Back to school started a week early for 22 young pupils and three members of staff from Eastside Young Leaders Academy (EYLA), as well as some of our own Lancing staff when they came to Lancing to spend three days at the end of August. The students ranged from 11–14 years of age and were selected by EYLA in London and Milton Keynes to participate in a Summer School and trial boarding experience.

This is the third year that Lancing and EYLA have come together for an exciting three days for the young students. The programme contains a mixture of academic lessons, life and study skills, drama and electronics (where the students build a battery-powered light to take home). A key part of the week is also to experience boarding and living in close proximity to others. The pupils take over Handford and Second's Houses, where they live as Lancing pupils.

A highlight each year is the formal dinner. This year pupils heard from Paige Taylor OL – former student and Foundationer – who spoke about Breaking Down Barriers and how she has had to do this throughout her life – at school, at university and now as an aspiring Barrister.

Talking about the programme at Lancing, Carol Murraine, Scholarship Programme Director at EYLA said: 'On behalf of myself, Lewis and the young leaders, I wanted to extend our heartfelt gratitude for hosting the Young Leaders 2023 residential. Your hospitality, guidance, and support throughout the week made it a truly unforgettable experience. It's been an incredible journey of growth and learning, and I couldn't have asked for more. Your dedication to nurturing our young leaders is truly inspiring.'

Head Master, Dominic Oliver – who taught debating during the week – has encouraged this summer programme from its inception three years ago: 'I was immensely impressed with the young leaders who joined us this year; their energy and enthusiasm to learn and enjoy their time with us was truly inspiring. We have a strong and long-term relationship with Eastside and they are instrumental in our Foundationers programme, sharing our ambitions to widen opportunities for all.

I am extremely grateful to the whole team at Lancing for their commitment to making this programme happen just before the start of the new term. Teachers, Housemistresses, Housemasters, and the catering and support teams are all involved in making sure that these are memorable days for the students.'
