Head Master's Welcome October 2023

These opening few weeks have been a blur of learning and activity and all those we welcomed to the College community at the beginning of September are now well and truly embedded in the rhythm of Lancing life. Their burgeoning confidence around the school is delightfully evident. I am also happy to report that our joyous festival start to the year on the Malawi walk and parent lunch brought more than sunshine and good company: our collective endeavours have raised over £18,000 (and counting) for our partners and the young people we support. All your efforts and generosity will make a huge difference: thank you.

The first set of Grades (short reports) for the year are newly available and this break will be a good time to reflect with your sons and daughters about the progress they are making in their studies. If you need a reminder about how to access Grades on the Parent Portal there is a link here in the newsletter.  This comes hot on the heels of today’s celebrations of our Metacognition Extended Essay prizes and the first Junior Diploma awards. Together these were the centrepiece of today’s specially extended Assembly. The focus on independent thinking and – in the Diploma – a truly holistic summation of the power of Lancing learning made for a mighty combination and there is a real spring in the collective Lancing step as we head for the half term break.

Finally for today, I’m grateful to everyone who returned questionnaires to the team from ISI who joined us to inspect this week; you played an important part in their deliberations. The procedure is such that we cannot report back on findings until they are discussed and confirmed at head office. This a new process (we are amongst the first schools to be inspected in this format) so it may all take some weeks, but rest assured that when we know the final outcomes and are given permission to share them we will be in touch with you.

With best wishes,
Dominic Oliver
