OLs Make Finals of Sussex Young Musician Competition

We are thrilled to announce that two former students, Kitty Casey (Saints’ House, 2017 – 2019) and James Edgeler (Head’s House, 2011 – 2016), have both reached the finals of the Sussex Young Musicians Competition.

Kitty, soprano, graduated from Lancing College in 2019 with a choral scholarship to Royal Holloway University. She will embark on a postgraduate study opera course at the esteemed Royal Northern College in Manchester this September.

My love of music was nurtured at Lancing through singing in the chapel choir, concerts and opera scenes. They supported me by providing me with time off to attend The Royal Academy of Music Saturday School and when I performed at the Glyndebourne Festival. I am looking forward to competing in the finals of the Sussex Young Musician Competition on 15th July, and will fly out to France the next day to perform as part of the Young Artists programme at the Belle-Ile-Sur-Mer festival.

James, a tenor, completed his studies at Lancing College before pursuing a BA degree in Music at Royal Holloway University. He excelled academically, achieving a First Class Honours and serving as the President of the Music Society. He is now preparing to pursue an MA in Vocal Studies at the prestigious Royal Academy of Music.

Looking forward to studying at the Royal Academy of Music, I can’t help but think of how much I owe to the support and encouragement I received at Lancing. The ever-supportive and knowledgeable music staff, the amazing quality of the ensembles, and the sheer number of opportunities to perform and create fulfilling music all shaped the musician I am today and will continue to shape the musician I hope to become. It is becoming increasingly rare to find a school that so readily embraces music and the arts, and I am extremely grateful that Lancing provided such an incredible platform from which to build a creative and musical career.

I am delighted, though not at all surprised, to hear of James’s and Kitty’s success in the Sussex Young Musicians’ Competition. Both James and Kitty were stalwarts of the musical life at Lancing; in fact, between them, I think they may have sung or performed in nearly every ensemble (!) including the Symphony Orchestra, Chapel Choir, Big Band, Lancing Opera Project, A Cappella Club, and Concert Band, as well as regularly performing solos with distinction. In taking up postgraduate offers to study at the Royal Academy of Music and the Royal Northern College of Music, respectively, they continue an impressive line of Lancing musicians who have studied at some of the UK’s most prestigious institutions. I am thrilled for them and wish them every success in the final.

Christopher Langworthy, Assistant Director of Music & Head of Academic Music

The Sussex Young Musicians Competition is hosted annually by Coro Nuovo, a local choir group born in 2013. This year’s finals will take place on Saturday the 15th of July at 7 pm, at the Methodist Church, Perrymount Road, Haywards Heath. If you’re interested in learning more or purchasing tickets, you can do so here.

It is wonderful to see that two of the three finalists are members of our OL community. We wish them both the absolute best of luck in the competition.
