Record Number of US Uni Applications

During the university application process Sixth Form pupils are supported by their Tutors, the Head of Sixth Form and – specifically for university outside of the UK – the Overseas Applications Coordinator, Mrs Helen Robinson. This year we have seen a high number of pupils applying to US universities.

Mrs Robinson writes: 'Alongside 2022 leaver Kitty C-H, Gary G, Henry H, Felicia H, Nana O-N and Natalie M have applied to a wide range of US universities. There is also an impressive variety of courses, from Maths to Politics. Henry has already received an offer from George Washington University alongside a sports scholarship. Nana has also applied for a sports scholarship and the prestigious Morehead-Cain Scholarship from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.'

During the Christmas break we heard that Fliss H has been accepted to Dartmouth. Fliss, who is currently studying English Literature, Latin and Politics at Lancing, has written about the recent news on her university offer.

'US colleges have incredible amounts of funding, the facilities are amazing and they have a wide range of courses on offer with a flexible course structure; in my first year I’ll be studying a broad liberal arts curriculum before I have to commit to one subject as my major in my second year. I plan to major in Arabic, Classics or Politics. This flexibility really attracted me to the US college system as it removes the pressure to commit to just one subject as soon as I leave school.

Dartmouth College is a prestigious Ivy League school but they don’t produce your typical cookie-cutter graduates. The ethos of the university is very liberal and accepting, they value their students as people as opposed to just their grades. As I applied via the Early Decision option, Dartmouth has always been my plan, however I would have sent in applications to Brown University, Columbia University and Smith College if I had not been accepted by Dartmouth.

In the future I would like to work in politics or international relations, with a goal to work as a diplomat in the Middle East or North Africa. I hope that my language-based degree and experience at an overseas university will help me in my future international endeavours.

The support here at Lancing has been amazing. Mrs Robinson has been on hand to answer any questions I had about the process, all my subject teachers have been very supportive and my Tutor, Mrs Britnell, has worked tirelessly compiling all my references and helping perfect my admissions essays - it felt like a win for all of us when I was accepted.

US colleges value extracurricular activities very highly and so the wide range of clubs, enrichment activities and leadership roles available to me here at Lancing also formed a key part of my application.'
