Sporting Highlights – 12 May 2023

Lots to celebrate on the sporting front this week already, even with the break for the Coronation celebrations. But first a quick look back to last week when the 1st XI Cricket team was victorious over Worth in the 100 ball Langdale Cup game. Having restricted Worth to 127 for 4 in their 100 balls, Lancing chased it down, winning by 6 wickets and 5 balls to spare. A good bowling performance from Jamie C with 2 for 12 – and a match winning innings of 56 – saw us home. The 1st team face Bede's in the next match and if successful Lancing will progress to the semi-final stages.

The U14As 100 ball Holdsworth Cup game v Brighton College last week.
As the scores were level – with Brighton College reaching Lancing’s 108 from 99 balls – a phone call to the ECB let us know that a super-over would be the outcome if Inigo A-B’s lethal off-spin was not to go for the final runs.
Sadly, he got hit to the square leg boundary after a mesmeric spell of bowling. Alex McG’s runs and tight bowling were the standout performance in a closely fought battle. Lancing was admirable in all aspects and really are a team to be feared. Brighton College got a shock we hope to repeat soon.

Tennis
On Thursday afternoon a young boys' 1st Team played host to Hurst in the quarterfinal of the U18 Boys National Glanville Cup.

The squad continued to impress on all accounts with members supporting one another and showing strong team cohesion throughout the afternoon. Congratulations to School House's Oliver M who made his debut in the 1st IV Team.

In the first round of matches, both Julian N and Logan B were pushed to three sets, both overcoming various obstacles along the way and fighting their way through to victory in a nail-biting Third set tie-break. Captaining the team, George H also secured an impressive win against the No1 seed from Hurst, 7-5 6-2. With Lancing leading 6-2 after the singles, the boys needed to win at least one of the two doubles matches to secure their place in the next round. Despite strong performances in the second set, Julian and Ollie struggled to convert their doubles match into the much needed final win, taking a 3-6 3-6 loss in the final round.

However it was the Saints' House duo who rose to the occasion, kept their nerve, utilised the pace of George's first serve with the quick reactions of Logan at the net, combined with great communication, to secure a 6-4 6-4 win in the final doubles, providing Lancing with the well deserved overall win 8-4. A really impressive afternoon of tennis on all accounts. The team now progress to the semi-finals to play rivals and reigning U16 County champions, Eastbourne College.

A mixed team of 14 athletes travelled to the K2 in Crawley for a twilight meet on Thursday afternoon and there was much to celebrate.

Will N won the triple jump in the Junior Boys’ event; Grace S came third in the 200m Intermediate Girls' race, and a commendable fourth in the 800m race. Joshua G achieved an impressive second place in the 100m Junior Boys' race and Luca Cucinotta came third in the 300m Junior Boys' race.

Nana O-N came fourth in the 100m Senior Boys’ race and James D came first in the Intermediate Boys’ high jump with an impressive 185cm. Lots of other personal bests for many of the students.
