Sporting Highlights – 28 April 2023

Cricket
We saw the start of the new cricket season last Saturday with the 1st XI & 14As taking on two Hampshire County Teams.

The 1st XI bowled first and restricted Hampshire to 254 for 9 with Omar M A & Ethan F taking two wickets each. Lancing had a slow start, losing Cosmo P early, but a good partnership between Max W scoring 22 and Jamie Chester with a brilliant 63 – and a cameo of 38 from Oscar Sheffield – saw Lancing reach 204 all out, 50 short of our target.

A solid fielding performance from the U14As kept them in the game with three early run outs, as Hampshire made an impressive 209 in 35 overs. Wickets were shared between Jo C, Alex McG, and Inigo A B. The Lancing chase faulted from the start of the innings as wickets fell frequently; cameos from Edward C, Cyrus D and Jo C showed fight, but we fell short by 74 runs.

A good start to the season against two very strong Hampshire County teams.

The first game of the season for the U15As saw the side travel to Eastbourne for the Holdsworth Cup earlier this week. We won the toss and decided to bowl first.
A good opening spell from Rafe C and Max S meant the side started positively. Harriet B bowled very well in the middle overs and picked up 2 wickets. Eastbourne batted well in to post 180.

The chase started promisingly with Charlie G and Theo S F putting on a solid opening partnership. Unfortunately, wickets fell frequently throughout the innings, leaving Lancing short by 70 runs.

A good effort for the side's first outing of this season.

On Tuesday the 1st XI took on a Hampshire College side. Bowling first, Lancing bowled the Hampshire College side out for 122, with James S taking three wickets and Omar M A taking two.

In reply Lancing lost an early wicket, but a good partnership between Cosmo P scoring 24 and Jamie C scoring 43 set up a platform for Ozzy R to see us near our total, with Omar M A and Oscar E seeing Lancing home to a 5-wicket win.

Tennis
The Lancing College Tennis Club has had a busy start to the term with teams competing in the National Aberdare and National Glanville Cup, the U18 & U16 Sussex League Tournaments, and the Year 9 & 10 LTA Youth Schools Tournament – all in the first two weeks!

Highlights include performances from the 1st team boys in the first round National Cup against Bede’s. The young U18s team consisting of George H, Logan B, Ralph H and Julian N all secured wins in their singles and doubles matches. The boys now progress through to the quarter finals against Hurst.

The Junior boys also took on Bede’s in the group stages of the Year 9 & 10 Youth Schools Tournament. Wins from Rory H, Loui G, Sutirith K, Shimon M and Gonzalo E R secured the team their first victory of the term, with the added bonus of not dropping a game across all singles and doubles matches – an impressive achievement in itself.

Finally, on Saturday Lancing played host to several Sussex schools for the U18 Sussex League tournament for the 23rd year. Artemii B, Will P and Sam Y made their 1st team debuts, alongside Ralph H who captained the team. There were lots of positives to take from the day with MVP being awarded to Sam Y for his performance in his singles matches against Hurst. The boys finished in a respectable fifth place, with Brighton College taking home the U18 shield for the first time in the tournament's history.

That same morning the young U16 girls team travelled to Hurst to compete in the equivalent tournament, while the U16 boys travelled to Ardingly. Both teams secured solid wins over Hurst, Ardingly and Worth in the preliminary rounds, and both progressed through to the main final against previous winners Eastbourne. Both Miss Airey and the Tournament organiser note that this was one of the closest and highest performing tennis finals ever played at the girls event at Hurst, with several County players competing and some sensational points played in both the singles and doubles.

The Lancing College team (who were all playing up at least 1+ age group) should be exceptionally proud of their performances both individually and as a team. Unfortunately, it wasn’t to be for either team, with both the boys and girls finishing as runners up (the
girls narrowly losing out by only two sets).

Team of the week is awarded to the U16 Girls’ team and medals are awarded to the U16 boys and U16 girls from last Saturday’s tournament.

Football
It has been an excellent start to girls’ football this term, with record numbers appearing for training which now takes place throughout the week.

In their first match of the term the 1st XI gave a dominant display, showing huge potential and beating Christ's Hospital 7-0. Goals from Romily T-J, Lily T (2), Grace S (2), Lara C and Harriet B – and an excellent performance from the Player of the Match, Hanna G-R – secured an outstanding win and a fantastic start to the term.

On Tuesday, our U15 girls travelled to Ardingly in the last 16 of the U15 National Cup. A tough match with Ardingly proved too much and despite a late goal from Nadiya L, Ardingly were too strong and progressed to the quarter finals of the competition. Having beaten Bedales and Bede's in previous rounds, and competed well against Ardingly, the Junior girls should be immensely proud of their efforts.

Star player of the week: Lily Townsend.

Badminton
The Lancing College Senior Girls' team travelled to Roedean on Thursday afternoon to play in their last badminton fixture of the 2022/23 season. A fantastic performance from all of our players with lots of close matches, and the Lancing girls were victorious, winning 26-24. The girls finish the season undefeated.

Congratulations to the following girls who represented Lancing:
Connie W, Nam S, Kristy W, Shanna J, Cloris C, Alysha H, Ally Y and Tiffany X

Equestrian
Over the Easter break, Lancing's riders were in action at two events: Combined Training at Coombelands and Eventers’ Challenge at Golden Cross. The latter took place on the last week’s very wet Friday and the team jumped well at 90cm to achieve second place and qualify for the National Championships at Hickstead. We have now qualified for 80cm and 90cm for the Nationals which takes place during the May Half Term.

Congratulations to the 90cm Team of Tom M, India M and Islay L.
