Sporting Highlights - 30 September 2022

Football
A big week for the Lancing College Football Club saw National Cup games for the U14s, U15s and 1st XI. The U14s were first up on Monday and after an excellent first half leading 4-1, they surrendered their lead to lose 5-4 in a disappointing second half performance.

Tuesday saw a tough trip to London for the U15s who faced Kingston Grammar School. In an evenly poised first half a questionable penalty led to an excellent save from Ian L, saving a penalty for the second time in as many matches. Clearly a turning a point in the match, Lancing kept their nerve and started to dominate the game in the second half, a convincing 5-1 victory. Marley R scored 2, Gethin W (playing up from the U14s) scored 2, and Man of the Match Sutirth K got 1.

The 1st XI also got their National Cup campaign underway with a dominant performance over Westminster School, winning 4-1. Henry S opened the scoring after excellent work from Henry H, who ran from inside his own half before cutting back to Henry S, who finished calmly. Goals in the second half came from Harry S, Henry H and Tom H.

All looks positive moving into a big weekend with fixtures on Saturday against the OLs, Bedales and Charterhouse.

Player of the week: Gethin W (with 4 goals in 2 matches)

Team of the Week: Mr Bird's U15A Team

Swimming
Over the last two weekends, Lancing's swimmers from both the Senior and Prep schools have been in action, picking up a good number of medals despite the summer break.

Last weekend, our swimmers competed in the Lis Hartley Long Course Open meet. Alessio M won 2 golds, 2 silvers and a bronze, beating his previous best times in three events. Isaac B also won 2 silvers and 1 bronze, just missing out on breaking the 1-minute barrier for long course, 100m freestyle time, in 1.00.13!

New Third Former Logan Bridgman’s increased training helped him to swim four personal best times at the weekend. Logan looks poised to join Alessio and Isaac soon, who have achieved 18 County qualifying times so far between them this year, with more to come. Both Alessio and Isaac are ranked highly at County level in their respective age groups.

James R concentrated on his training this weekend instead of racing as he has been selected to swim for Sussex in the National Inter-County Competition at Ponds Forge in Sheffield on 1 October. Congratulations James and the very best of luck.

Tennis
On Wednesday, the U16 tennis boys travelled to Eastbourne to play in the semi final of the LTA Division 2 County Youth Schools' tournament, after having won their league last term. The team played a combination of singles and doubles matches which consisted of some marathon rallies, superb net play, solid serving, and nail-biting match points saved. Special mention goes to Fourth Formers Julian N who made his debut for the College winning his doubles with Logan B 6-3, with Logan also taking home the win in his singles match 6-3. Despite strong performances from both Matthew and Johan in both their singles and doubles, the overall win went to Eastbourne who won 30 games to our 25.

The U15 girls will be playing for their place in the County finals when they take on Mayfield on 13 October.

Hockey

The U16s had their County Tournament preliminary games on Monday and approached the day with an excellent attitude! Facing tough opposition in Burgess Hill, Hurst and Mayfield, the team performed brilliantly with a nail biting 1-0 loss vs Hurst, a brilliant 1-0 win vs Mayfield and a spirited effort in a 2-0 loss vs Burgess Hill. Lots of positives to be taken away for the U16s who on the day represented Lancing in excellent fashion.

Our U14s welcomed Seaford and Hurst to our home ground on a sunny yet crisp morning in pursuit of progressing through to the next round of the County Cup.

Our first fixture against Seaford saw a high percentage of possession within our defensive circle. However, the girls remained strong with their defensive approach. This led to a perfect through-ball into space towards Seaford's goal for Emily S to race towards the ball, defeating numerous defenders to slot it into the goal to make it 1-0 before half time. Despite their best efforts to hold off from conceding in the second half, Seaford managed to sneak a goal to draw the game as the final whistle blown finishing 1-1.

Our second fixture against Hurst began with the girls putting a lot of pressure on their opponents. Our U14As fought extremely hard throughout the game, making great plays but unable to gain any outcomes; Hurst progressed to the next round.

Thursday also saw our Senior 2nd XI playing at home vs a strong PGS side. The game started promisingly, with the Lancing girls taking the initiative and applying plenty of pressure; we were unlucky not to get the opening goal. PGS went on the attack and managed to score two in quick succession. This would be how the game ended, with our GK Grace M taking Player of the Match with a plethora of excellent saves.

Saturday sees our first team and the U15As in action versus PGS.
