Sporting Highlights - 7 October 2022

Football
A busy week has seen much success for Lancing College Football. The Junior teams have had wins against Bedales, Charterhouse and Royal Russell, whilst Senior victories against our OLs and local rivals Steyning Grammar School have brought much satisfaction to all.

Our U15s went undefeated at Bedales, with a 5-2 victory for the A Team, and 1-1 draw for the Bs. At home, the U14As drew and beat Charterhouse in a triangular format of matches on Saturday.

On Tuesday, we hosted Royal Russell in extremely competitive matches. Again, the pick of the day, was our U14A team who beat Royal Russell 3-2. They showed resilience and put in a hard working second half performance.

For the Seniors, an extremely competitive weekend of matches saw one victory and two losses against our OLs, the second team picking up the win 2-0 with an excellent performance.

Also this week, the 1st XI opened their ESFA National Cup campaign with a 5-0 win over Steyning Grammar School. A brace from Harry S and Henry S helped to seal the win.

Team of the week: U14A (Manager Mr Tobias)

Player(s) of the week – Joe E and Kwame N O

Swimming
James R swam for Sussex in the Swim England National County Team Championships last Sunday in the Boys 16/17 yrs 100m Fly. He swam in a personal best time of 58.81 seconds finishing in 4th place overall. This helped Sussex finish in second place overall and the County will move up to Division 1 next year as a result. Well done James!

Hockey
This week saw our 1st XI and U15A in action vs Portsmouth Grammar School.

The 1st XI travelled to a cold and windy Portsmouth. The fixture started promisingly with the 1st XI enjoying their fair share of possession; they had chances to open the scoring early with the PGS GK making some good saves. PGS then put together a well-organised attack and followed this up with some good play that saw them going into the half time break 2-0 up. The Lancing girls approached the second half with grit and determination, but alas it wasn’t enough to take the win.

Our U15As played at home and had a great start to the game, enjoying the majority of possession and chances in the first half. Despite Lancing’s consistent pressure, the game was in the balance and remained 0-0 with only minutes to play. The last 30 seconds of play saw a fantastically worked team goal with Sienna R taking the claim and the match winner. A well-deserved win and an excellent display of team work.

This Saturday sees our U15B and U14A back in action vs Seaford.

Cricket
In cricket, we congratulate Emma S who has been nominated by Broadwater Cricket Club to attend trials to play for Sussex. Emma will start her training next March with the women’s team.

Basketball
The Lancing Basketball Club had their first Senior game of the season last Thursday, away to Michael Hall. With several of last year's squad still at Lancing, the chemistry in training has been great and the team was confident going into the match. From the tip off, Lancing dominated the contest. The final score was 77-40 and the top scorer was Max T with 22 points.

Tennis
On Thursday the U15 girls played in the finals of the LTA Division 2 Youth Schools Tournament against Mayfield School.

The team of Hattie P, Kitty H, Amelia P and Coco M (from Lancing Prep Hove) got off to a terrific start, winning both doubles matches 6-0 6-0.

With just the singles to go, the girls went into the final round fired up and played Mayfield off the court winning 6-0, 6-0, 6-1, 6-3, and taking the over win 12-0.

The girls have now qualified through to the regional finals, which take place in Sutton next Thursday. We wish the girls the best of luck in this final stage of the tournament.
