175 Years of Lancing College

Celebrations for Lancing College’s 175th Anniversary year began in 2023 with the creation and curation of our 175th Anniversary Portraits. A hanging gallery of 28 individuals integral to the Lancing College Community and making a positive difference in the world were captured by portrait artist Fran Monks and are displayed in our Dining Room alongside our Founder and benefactors. All biographies of those included in the Portrait gallery can be viewed here.

In addition to the Head Master’s lecture series featuring inspirational speakers, Sir Nigel Bogle, OBE and OL, and Professor Mary Ann Lund, we were honoured to take part in a Broadcast recording of Choral Evensong. Music by Joubert, Darke, Carter and Franck were combined in a service led by Fr Justin, which included readings and prayers from Lancing College staff and pupils. The event was broadcast on BBC Radio 3 from the Lancing Chapel.

In January, Choral Vespers presented Britten’s Ceremony of Carols by candlelight at Lancing Chapel. The choir was joined by harpist Heather Wrighton in a splendid collaboration.

Our 175th Anniversary celebrations continue in 2024 with a number of further events.

On 13 March, Lancing College Choir Symphony Orchestra, String Chamber Orchestra and four chamber music ensembles are performing an outstanding musical programme at Southwark Cathedral, London, a glorious venue on the South Bank.

In April, Lancing choirs and strings unite with Sing with Strings, the Bernardi Music Group String Academy, The Yehudi Menuhin School and local primary, secondary and prep schools for a multigenerational community folk Opera. Lancing Chapel hosts over 400 performers over three performances for a musical spectacular. Tickets for Beware the Mackerel Sky are now available to purchase online here.

The Head Master’s lecture series continues in May with guest speaker Pat Fry, Chief Technical Officer at Williams Racing. Pat began his Formula 1 journey in 1987 and, since then, has held senior engineering positions at some of the sport’s most prestigious teams, including McLaren and Ferrari. During his time at McLaren, which spanned an impressive 17 years, Pat made significant contributions to the team’s success. He was instrumental in securing 66 Grand Prix wins, one Constructors’ Championship victory, and three Drivers’ Championships. (Tickets for this event will be available in due course).

In June, celebrations and the academic year culminate in the 175th Anniversary Ball. Open to the Lancing Community over 18 years old. The evening will begin at 6pm with a ‘Sussex Bubbles’ drinks reception in the gardens surrounding the Chapel. The party will then move to the marquee in the Lower Quad for a sumptuous summertime feast, served by award-winning caterers, Caper and Berry.  Following dinner, the hottest party band ‘The Dark Blues’ perform for some ‘kick off your shoes’ dancing. A fireworks finale ends the celebrations, one to remember for the next 175 years. We encourage guests to secure their tickets promptly to avoid disappointment.

Visitors to the College can also see a visual timeline, spanning the History of Lancing from its founding in 1848 up to the present day. The timeline highlights key moments alongside significant milestones in our 175-year history.
