Congratulations to Rosalind D, Fifth Form, who recently won ‘Performer of the Year’ at the Worthing Music and Arts Festival – the highest level of award given at the Festival.

The following Lancing students all achieved awards: Gold for Owen D and Mridul S;  Silver for Angus K, Natalie C, Ben B, Tom A and Paris Y; and Bronze for Heidi T, Christy L and Shirin M.

Linguistics Olympiad
Well done to our 14 students who competed in this year's Linguistics Olympiads. They solved problems based on languages such as Swedish, Italian, Maltese, Buhid (language of the Mangyan people in the Philippines) and indigenous languages of South America (Zuni and Tseltal). The selection of problems proved to be challenging and well done to everyone participating and trying their best. There were five students who performed highly, with the third place shared between Sofiia S (Fourth Form), Natalie C and Richard E (Upper Sixth); second place was taken by Hannah C (Fifth Form); Tiffany X (Fifth Form) won this year’s Olympiad, finishing first - congratulations!

Lent Term 'Maths Problem of the Week'
We have had some terrific solutions throughout the term to some really interesting and challenging Olympiad style problems, which have included lots of terrific geometry and algebra designed to take even our very best pupils outside their comfort zone. Well done to all who took part, but particular congratulations to the following who solved all or almost all of the problems through the 11-week term. It really is wonderful to see them taking on things well outside the syllabus and enjoying the academic challenge of Mathematics at this level.

Mridul S - all 11 problems solved
Owen D - all 11 solved
Vivi L - all 11 solved
Kristy W - all 11 solved

Randa H - 9 solved

We also congratulate Harry Z (Third Form) for completing every Problem of the Week this term; and Tiffany Y (Fifth Form), Paddy J and Sofiia S (Fourth Form) for completing all but one.

Travel Awards 2022
This year’s applications were well researched, adventurous, and personally challenging projects, and the winners presented them stylishly and with commitment and determination in interview. Awards are made as follows:

Ruth B receives the David Barwell Travel Award and half of the Patrick Halsey Travel Award – a total of £700 – for her long-distance hike on the Offa’s Dyke path following the English-Welsh border.

Zoe C receives the Peter Beattie Prize (for a project involving service to the underprivileged) and half of the Patrick Halsey Travel Award – a total of £1,000 – for her expedition to Nepal with Raleigh International, trekking and volunteering on a water and sanitation project.

These travel awards are given annually, and we hope that the endeavour and imagination on display in this year’s winning projects will inspire others to consider applying in the years to come.
