Pupils complete Biology fieldwork

On 22 September all Upper Sixth Biology students completed their practical experiments, a crucial component of Biology A Level. The first task took place in the school's Open Air Theatre, where the students collected data on the surface area of leaves on different step levels. The data was then analysed using a statistical analysis test. At this site the students also collected soil from each step in order to test the different soil moisture content at different levels.
The next task was to collect data up the hill behind the Theatre, to see how the distance down the slope affected the height of the grass. This was followed by another statistical analysis test.
Samples from different bodies of water were also taken during the exercise from down by the Dyke field and from the Biology pond. The students compared and investigated the species richness at each site, and found that the richness was much greater at the pond.
It was a fascinating and enjoyable day, which allowed the students to put into practice what they had learnt about biodiversity during their Biology classes.
