Sporting Highlights - 10 February 2023

Netball
A busy weekend against Christ’s Hospital and Eastbourne, with six Junior matches here at home and four Senior teams away at Christ’s Hospital.

The U14As got the match of the day with a 19-7 win over Christ’s Hospital. The U15 Players of the Day awards went to Chloe W, Ava S and Lara C, while the U14 Players of the Day were Emily S and Nadiya L. Some highly competitive Senior games saw Lulu B and Mia J credited with outstanding play throughout the afternoon.

On Thursday our 1st VII and U16As took on Bede’s. The 1st team managed a hugely successful win of 53 goals to 23, with Riva S the Player of the Day. The U16s narrowly lost 35-30, with Eva H awarded Player of the Match.

On Tuesday the U14As and U15As went away to SISNA, facing strong opponents and playing some fantastic netball, and starting to really develop their skills.

Highlight games were the U15s vs Christ's Hospital, who only lost by 1 goal after losing to them by 20 at the weekend. Similarly the U14s only lost by 1 goal to Worth after losing by 16 goals to them earlier in the season, but delivered three fantastic wins against Mayfield, Christ's Hospital and Brighton & Hove Girls.

The U14s had some fantastic shots made by Grace H and Nadiya L, but Players of the Tournament go to Amelia G and Emily S. Players of the Tournament for the U15s go to Chloe W, Hattie P and Lara C.

Overall the U14s came 9th in their group whilst the U15s came 11th. Both with lots to work on, but lots of positives to take away.

Football
In a busy week of football, the Senior football teams were first involved in matches against Christ's Hospital. The 1st XI won convincingly 7-1, whilst Freddie B scored in the last minute to help the 2nd XI to a 2-1 win; the 3rds were on the reverse of the same scoreline, narrowly losing 2-1 in a close match.

Last Saturday the 1st, 2nd and 3rd XI entertained Cranleigh at Lancing. Despite competitive matches, Lancing were defeated 4-3, 2-0 and 4-0; however performances were good and many pupils stepped up to play in the highest level of football they had played this season, which bodes well for the future.

Tuesday saw our 1st XI host Bede's in the County Cup Quarter-Final. In an end-to-end match the game finished 3-3 and, after extra time, was decided via the dreaded penalty kicks: Lancing were just one strike away from victory and Bede's ended up victorious, winning the shootout 7-6. Despite their disappointment the 1st XI should be proud of their efforts in coming so close to victory, and will hopefully learn from this experience ahead of their National Trophy semi-final after Half Term.

Hockey
The weekend saw a block fixture vs Ardingly with six teams out representing Lancing College.

The fixtures were very competitive with coaches from both schools commenting on the Lancing boys' excellent work rate and drive across all of the fixtures!

Teams of the Week:
The U14A played away from home and started the game brightly with the first half producing some excellent hockey with both teams creating chances to score. The U14As were unlucky not to capitalise and fell just short with the game ending 1-0 to Ardingly, the scoreline not fully reflecting what was an outstanding performance from the Lancing team. MVP – Bryn H.

The 1st XI also played away from home and, like U14As, started the game with a relentless pace and energy which saw Lancing take the lead with a well worked penalty corner scored by Harry S. The game was a close affair with Ardingly equalising before half time.

The second half was very tense with the 1st XI dealing with a lot of pressure from Ardingly. With the game in the balance the 1st XI managed to stay calm, with Bradley H continuing his scoring streak as he got Lancing’s second goal late in the second half. James S then managed some excellent saves in the dying moments of the game to ensure the Lancing Victory. A brilliant 2-1 win for the 1st XI and a fantastic team performance leading into the Half Term break! MVPs – Harry S & Ozzy R.

A fiesty Ardingly 3rd XI effectively out-muscled the Lancing 2nd XI and we came unstuck for a 3-0 defeat. Notable efforts from Finn S and Kieran P were certainly highlights, with the Man of Match performance going to Ethan H for his unstinting tenacity. A tough outing against a gritty team that left no shoulder un-barged!

MVP’s from our other fixtures:

2nd XI – Ethan H; U15A – Theo S F; U15B – Zechariah A; U14B - Monty T.

Mid term colours have been awarded in the following sports:
