Sporting Highlights - 21 January 2022

Individual congratulations to Izzy H (Third Form) and her U15 Sussex Squash team who won the National County Title last weekend. They beat a tough Hampshire side 2-1 in the semi-finals and then won convincingly against Lancashire 3-0 in the final to become National Champions. Well done Izzy.

On Tuesday our Cross-country team travelled to Waterhall to compete in the Sussex Schools Cross Country Championships. For most of the students this was their first outing at such a large scale meet. However, every single runner showed great character in their race. Notable performances on the day from Fin S who came sixth, and Max W who came 10th in the Inter Boys 6K race, and Joe C who placed 21st over 7K.

A really pleasing display from the Lancing runners.

The Senior Netballers have been busy this term, taking on the OLs on the first weekend of term - a side whose oldest member left the College some 10 years ago!

With youth on our side, the first half looked promising for Lancing College. The OLs dug deep, and age and wisdom were to be the overall winners, with the OLs taking the win in the final quarter. A fabulous afternoon of netball had by all!

Last weekend, the Netball 1st team went to Seaford and played in a tournament against schools across the district. All the games were hugely competitive, especially against Worth, King Edward's Witley and PGS, where the scores were very close. Special mention goes to Milly B, Georgia M, Kitty P and Poppy S for their excellent play across the day.

On Tuesday the netball 1st and 2nd teams travelled to Burgess Hill, with the second team coming away with their first win of the season. Fantastic shooting from Charina G and Scarlett P resulted in 34 goals for Lancing, to BH's seven. The 1st team narrowly lost out, but all the girls played exceptionally well and have already improved a lot this term. We look forward to the upcoming block against Worth School.

On Thursday, the 1st Hockey team played in a tough match against Hurstpierpoint College. The boys had a nervy start, then found some good passages of play, building momentum, and resulting in Marlon Fendler scoring the first goal from a short corner; Lancing 1-0 up at half time.

Unfortunately, Hurst struck back early in the second half to equalise. Lancing showed character and excellent counter-attacking hockey with Kwame N linking up with Nana O-N, who scored into the left corner to make it 2-1. With the last play of the game, Hurst scored from a set play to finish at 2-2. An excellent game to watch and a great performance from the Lancing College 1st XI.

Looking back to the last day of the Advent Term the Senior House Hockey tournament took place on a beautiful sunny day. The matches were extremely competitive with Manor setting the tone in the first game and gathering momentum throughout the afternoon to be overall winners, collecting the Shield for the coming year.

The eagerly anticipated Senior House Football Cup took place before Christmas and it was great to see such a well-supported competition. Students and staff came down to support their Houses and all teams competed well. In a round robin format, unbeaten School House took the first place in the final and were joined by Head’s, who narrowly made their way into the final on goal difference, having pipped Gibbs' by just two goals. In the final, Ozzy R’s brace was enough to gain the victory for School House. Will B took home player of the tournament and Ollie F and Louis J Q shared the golden boot with three goals each. Congratulations to Mr Mole and all from School House, this year's trophy winners.

Finally, Mr Benson (Head of Football) has awarded Full Football Colours to Miles McN, Victor A and Will C. Each received their colours and ties in this week's Head Master's Assembly.
