Sporting Highlights - 27 May 2022

The Lancing sporting community will definitely be on show this Founder's Day (28 May) with Sports Day taking place on the 1st team pitch, high jump in the centre of the track, boys' and girls' cricket on the lower pitches and mixed tennis taking place on the grass courts. What a spectacle and a fabulous way to celebrate Founder's Day and to conclude a successful sporting year. Good luck to all who are taking part.

While everyone else is charging round the track, Pippa S, Ralf B, Islay L and India M will be competing at Hickstead in the National Finals of the Novice Eventers' Challenge Championships. Over 240 riders from 70 schools are competing, having qualified during the year at events up and down the country. We wish them luck.

Last Saturday the Athletics Team travelled to K2 in Crawley to compete in the finals of the Independent Schools Diamond League. We started well, with Grace S winning her 200m heat and Jakob L winning his hurdles race. Other highlights came from Flynn S and James D, who went neck-and-neck on the high jump, both withdrawing on the same height. It will be an exciting contest between these two jumpers on Founder's Day!

The Cricket Club played a full block against Worth School last week. The 1st XI won the toss and elected to bowl which turned out to be a good decision as Lancing restricting Worth to 113 for 6. Hamish K, the pick of the bowlers, took 2 for 12. After tea Lancing lost their first wicket early in the second innings, but a 61-run partnership between Tom H and Jamie C steadied the ship. Special mention must go to Thomas B who came in to score the winning runs.

The 2nd XI started brightly with the opening bowlers restricting Worth to 45-2 off 10 overs. Worth re-built and scored 119 in total. Lancing chased positively for the first 10 overs and were ahead of the run rate, but suffered a collapse which left little time to chase the final score. Our U15As restricted Worth to 169 for 5, with Cal N taking 2 for 30. A fantastic chase saw Lancing fall just short by 2 runs. Zac A-J top-scored with 54.

Mr Maru (Director of Cricket) awarded Lucas C (Third Form) the match ball from his game for taking a majestic hat-trick (4 wickets for 4 runs).

The Senior Girls travelled up to Worth School to play their third competitive game of the season. Fielding first, Lancing showed terrific agility and precision in their fielding, securing four run outs and Vivi S took an excellent catch. In reply, Mia B impressed on her debut, smashing her first delivery back past the bowler for four. Lancing comfortably overhauled their opposition's score of 219 and emerged worthy winners.

The Junior Girls also took on Worth at home. After losing the toss and being put into bat, Lancing put a very respectable 112-0 on the board. Harriet B and Bella B should both be congratulated for scoring 20 not out (retired), having also shared a 50 partnership. In the field, some economical bowling from Lancing restricted Worth to 50-6 off their 16 overs, with the wickets being shared between the bowlers.

The combination of tactical play from Bede’s and some luck in the form of three net cords, resulted in our 1st IV Boys' Tennis team losing out 10-7 in the final tie break, and ending their ever-so-impressive, National Cup journey last Saturday. Huge congratulations to the four boys who have played in some fantastic contests to get them there – George H, George N, Henry H (prep school) and Jaydon H. Well done boys!

The rest of the Tennis Club also faced a tough day on Saturday, playing a block fixture against Brighton College. The Senior Boys and Girls took on Brighton’s 1st team at home, narrowly losing out 3-6 3-6. Special mentions go to Will C and Ollie C for playing some cracking tennis on the grass and taking out Brighton’s number one pair, winning 7-5.

The Junior Boys travelled to Brighton where the 14As left triumphant, winning their fixture 7-2. The 15As again narrowly lost out 1-3, but had some very close matches along the way. Team of the week is awarded to the U14A boys.
