Sporting Highlights - 30 April 2021

It has been an incredibly busy but positive start for the Lancing College Tennis Club.

Last Saturday, the 1st IV Senior Girls Tennis team opened the return of competitive sport at Lancing by hosting Seaford College in the first round of the National Aberdare Cup. Izzy H dominated her match winning 6-0/6-0, shortly followed by victories from Alicia H, Kitty P and Olesia G. After a successful start in the singles, the girls remained unbeaten in the doubles, with Alicia and Izzy winning 6-0/6-1 and Kitty and Olesia winning 6-2/6-1. Congratulations to all! A fantastic and promising start to an exciting season ahead.

MVP is awarded to Kitty P for making her debut in the 1st Team and winning both her singles and doubles matches. The girls now face Brighton College in the quarterfinals.

George N (captain of 1st VI Senior Boys) writes:
Later that day, the U16 and U18 Boys competed in their first competitive tournament of the year, The Sussex League. The U16 Boys travelled to Ardingly and faced a series of tough, older, competitors, and ultimately finished in 7th place. Highlights of the afternoon include their 8-4 win over Hurstpierpoint College. MVP is awarded to Henry C (Fifth Form).

The U18 Boys were in action at home where Lancing hosted the likes of Bede’s, Eastbourne, Hurst, Brighton College, Ardingly, and Worth. With three debutants, Alex M, Jayden H and George H, the team topped their group winning seventeen out of the eighteen available matches. This placed them in the final against Bede's, where after all six matches, the score was level at 6 matches each, with Lancing narrowly missing out on the overall win by virtue of games won as the score ended 19-15 in favour of Bede's. This still earned the boys a well-deserved 2nd place in their first tournament back, with the MVP being awarded to Will T.

Tuesday U15 Sussex Shield Tournament:
Finally, on Tuesday the 1st IV U15A boys travelled to Bede's to play in the annual Sussex Shield Tournament. Captained by Will T, the team included Ralph H, Jayden H and George H. In the first round of matches, the boys played Eastbourne College, Cardinal Newman, and Brighton College, where they won two out of their three matches leaving them runners up in the group and qualifying to the semi-finals where they drew the home team Bede's who had finished first in their group. After two very close and intense doubles matches, the boys battled through, playing some phenomenal team tennis resulting in winning both and allowing them to progress through to the finals where they would face Cardinal Newman (again) who they had previously lost to in the initial group stages. With the crowd now growing, and after the huge victory over Bede's in the semi-finals, all of the boys were pumped and ready to face a very strong Cardinal Newman side. Once again, facing tough opponents, the scores went down to the wire on both courts. In the end, after some incredible rallying from George H, Jayden H and Ralph H, as well as some unbelievable passing shots and serving from Will T, the boys came out on top to win the tournament in straight sets. The atmosphere on court from the Lancing boys during the final was massive and allowed them to stay focused, positive and ultimately, helped lead them to victory!

At next week's Head Master's Assembly, we will invite the four boys to collect their individual medals and the U15 Sussex Shield.

This has been an incredibly positive first week and a half back for the Lancing College tennis club. Congratulations to those who have already made their return to competitive matches this term. Next week block fixtures return for both the 1st and 2nd Senior Boys and Girls, and the U15 & U14 Boys and Girls, when the Club takes on Worth and Seaford College.
