Sporting Highlights - 5 May 2023

It was a glorious afternoon of sport on Saturday 29 April, with cricket, girls' football and tennis on display here at the College. It was fantastic to see so many pupils representing the school and what a successful weekend we had.

Cricket

Saturday 29th April v Block Charterhouse
The 1st XI won by 8 wickets. With a disciplined bowling performance, we restricted Charterhouse to 91 in their 30 overs and with a positive batting display we chased down the score, only losing 2 wickets. Excellent bowling by Jamie C with 3 wickets for 9 runs, and a wicket each for Omar M A, James S and Ozzy R. Cosmo P with 32 and Ozzy R with 33-not-out made sure we reached our target with 8 overs to spare.

2nd XI
In the first game of the season for our 2nd XI, we managed to set a target of 103 on a tricky wicket after 30 overs. Unfortunately, the opposition found the conditions easier and managed to chase the runs down after only losing one wicket. Standout performance of the match was Cal N, unbeaten with 58.

U15A
Lancing won the toss and elected to bat first in the sunshine. The innings started positively with openers Charlie G and Theo S-F looking strong. A flurry of wickets, saw Lancing all out for under 50 on what was a tough wicket to score on. The welcomed break between innings saw the Lancing side reinvigorated and their energy to put on a fantastic bowling display managed to get the opposition 8 wickets down in the defence of a very low score. Although not a win the performance in the second innings was exceptional. Very good bowling performances from standout players Max S and Darcy H.

U14A
The demolition of Charterhouse was led by a swashbuckling 85 from Alex McG and a very statesmanlike run-a-ball 65 from Alex G. 208 was always going to be a tall order, and with three leg spinners at our disposal it became an embarrassment of riches. Spinners twirled, wickets fell, and Charterhouse capitulation was complete with a 140-run win.

Girls U14
The U14 girls travelled to Charterhouse for their first competitive fixture of the season which, for a few of the players, was their first game of cricket. Grace W was the pick of the bowlers, giving away few runs and collecting her first wicket with a clean bowled dismissal of one of the opposition openers. Lancing worked hard in the field but struggled to chase the target. Excellent leadership by Ava U and an inspired debut performance at wicketkeeper by Poppy G has laid down some promising foundations for the rest of the season.

Senior Girls
In a tough opening fixture against Charterhouse, Lancing amassed a modest 31 runs. Good bowling from Charterhouse prevented Lancing establishing momentum, although some impressive hitting from Poppy S and Mia J showed signs of good things to come. Charterhouse passed Lancing's total, winning by 8 wickets.
Champagne moment: Amelie T's stunning catch at square leg off Poppy S's bowling – removing the opening Charterhouse batswomen with the very first ball of their innings (a wicket with the first ball of the season!).

2nd XI vs Eastbourne College (mid-week cup match)
The second match of the season saw the team face off against a very strong Eastbourne College. After a tough start with the ball, Lancing managed to slow down the scoring and limit Eastbourne to 130 off their 100 balls. Unfortunately, the Eastbourne bowling attack proved too strong for our batters, and we finished on 88-6 off the 100 balls.

U15A vs Christ's Hospital (Blackshaw Bowl)
Captain Rafe C won the toss and elected to bowl first in the gloomy overhead conditions. An excellent start by opening bowlers Max S, Rafe C and Alex McG restricted Christ's Hospital to 72. The pressure continued as Darcy H came on to bowl and took two very important wickets. A majestic batting display by Alex McG for 40-not-out made sure Lancing reached their total with six overs to spare. A very good win for the team.

Girls Football
After a tough weekend fixture in which a young senior 1st XI fell to defeat against Worth, the U14s and U15s were in action on Tuesday against Claremont. A clean sweep with wins for the U15A 7-1, U14A 3-1 and combined u14/15B 5-3, ensured a fantastic afternoon of football for Lancing. The Junior girls are showing much promise with five wins from their opening six matches; they have also been drawn at home to Reigate Grammar School in the Quarter Final of the ISFA National Trophy. This week's Star Player was Harriet B.

Tennis
Last Saturday saw the Junior and Senior boys' and girls' teams take on Ardingly College, with the boys travelling away to Ardingly and the girls playing host here at the College across all nine courts. Unfortunately, the 1st VI Senior girls missed out on the overall win by 1 set; however, there was still lots to be proud of with back-to-back wins by Isabella H and Constanza D, and close matches for Bea J and Mimi W, who both made their 1st Team debut.

The U15 Junior girls took an 11-1 victory over Ardingly, dropping only 1 set throughout the afternoon. Players of the day were Isabella H (Senior team) and Hattie P and Amelia P for the U14/15 girls.

Away at Ardingly, there were strong performances across the board from both the U15 and U14 boys, with the U15As taking a 9-0 win, and the U14As securing a solid 6-3 win.
MVPs were Austin J and Lucas B.

A slightly tougher day at the office for the 1st VI boys who faced a more experienced team at Ardingly, and ultimately struggled to overcome the pace of the opposition. There was still plenty to be pleased with and to reflect on, and since the fixture the team has worked hard this week at areas highlighted in the post-match debrief.  MVP was awarded to Dan T.

The 2nd VI Senior boys – all Fifth Formers – had a much closer series of matches, with the result going down to the third round and wins from Magnus D & John-Philipp L, and Paddy J & Alex K securing the 5-4 win to Lancing.
MVPs were awarded to Dan T from the 1st VI, and Johan M & Fin W from the 2nd VI.
