Sporting Highlights - Friday 4 February 2022

The enthusiasm for the League Run continues and last week was no exception with almost 200 runners making their way round the course in lovely weather and excellent conditions. This, and an increase in general fitness, provided some excellent times for all and particularly at the front of the field.

In the Boys’ race Max W remains unbeaten and took just 1 second off his previous best with a time of 10:02, just 7 seconds ahead of Joe C in second and Max S (from the Third Form) in a very creditable third.

In the Girls’ race there were some much-improved times by all, but none could beat Grace S, who matches Max in having won all the races so far this term. Her time of 11:48 is also the fastest for a girl in many years. There were good times for Lulu B and Tallulah R in second and third place respectively.

In the Team competition things are warming up nicely, with Second's just ahead in the boys, and Manor in the girls.

Our senior hockey teams were in action last Saturday against Seaford College. They battled well, particularly the 2nd XI who narrowly lost 2-1 with Cosmo P scoring in the first 10 seconds of the game, which is arguably the quickest goal ever for Lancing College. The 1st XI also competed very well against Seaford but were left with too much to do in the final 10 minutes. With decisions not going our way, Seaford scored on the break in the final minutes, winning 4-2.

The U14 and U15 teams had a challenging Saturday with a lot of disruptions and distractions due to illness and injury. Nonetheless, the boys competed well and learnt a lot from the games to help them develop and prepare for Ardingly this Saturday 5 February, and for future matches.

During the week our senior football girls got their pre-season preparations underway with a home fixture against Cardinal Newman, who edged what was a closely fought encounter. Nonetheless, it was excellent to see the girls in competitive action, getting ready for their League campaign which gets going after Half Term. On Saturday, a mixed Senior football team hosted Whitgift. Despite a 2-1 loss, a good team performance was shown in a game which could have gone either way – well done to the players.

Last Saturday, the netball first team played against Worth. Thanks to excellent defending from Alice S, great play down court from Poppy Sand great shooting from Lulu B and Georgia M, they came away with a win with the final score being 29-26. Most valuable player went to Rosie H. We are sure this will be the first win of many and well done to all the team.

It was a cracking afternoon of Junior netball away at Worth last Saturday with both the U14 A and U14 B teams securing their first win of the season.

The 14Bs got off to an excellent start with their first competitive match this year. All the girls played really well with special mentions going to Sara K for her direct and efficient transitions down the court, and India M and Sammy S’s sensational shooting, resulting in a 9-2 victory.

The 14As also got off to a quick start, dominating the first quarter with strong play from everyone, but particularly capitalising on the slick routine centre pass set plays from Hattie P and Kitty H. The combination of confident shooting and top teamwork by Sasha F and Emma B led to Lancing taking a 9-6 lead by the end of the second quarter. The defensive trio made up of Izzy H, Chloe W and Tilly L were put to the test in the third quarter, when Worth upped their game. Our girls made some beautiful interceptions and had the confidence to try out set pieces practised earlier in training. Lancing found themselves almost neck and neck going into the final quarter; the girls dug deep, made some essential turnovers and remained cool, calm and collected when shooting, which eventually secured them the win 18-17.

MVP was awarded to Chloe W for the second week running. A special mention also goes to Emma B and Sasha F for their sensational shooting.

The U15A had a tough day Saturday with several members of the squad out due to injury and illness meaning the squad had no subs for the game ahead. They took on a tough Worth side with lots of physicality in both circles. The girls put into play a lot of great skill and effort. Worth however fought hard and took the win 17-5. Most Valuable Player was awarded to Claire M.

The U15B also played against Worth on Saturday. It was a close game where the girls played well as a team and fought hard the entire game. Unfortunately, due to some really good individual performances from the opposition, they were narrowly beaten 16-12. Most Valuable Player was awarded to Grace S.

On Tuesday the U16A netball team travelled to Angmering. At the end of the first quarter we were up just one point 8-7. Throughout the entire game we managed to keep possession and edge further in the lead, resulting in the final score of 26-17. Eva and Grace were continuously intercepting Angmering's feeds to their shooters in the circle. Evie and Pippa would then help to carry the ball down court into the attack for Annabel and Rania to do some amazing dodges and shots. Despite the excessively windy conditions we still pulled away with an impressive win. Most Valuable Player was awarded to Ellie F S by Angmering school.

A superb afternoon of Netball at Hurst on Thursday afternoon at the Sussex Independent Schools Netball Association (SISNA), the biggest tournament of the term. Our 1st VII put on a valiant display which lasted 11 round of netball. We posted wins against Ardingly, Worth, Christ’s Hospital and a tie against Roedean – a good day on the courts. Well done to all!

Most valuable players on the day were Rosie H, Charina G, Lucy T, Chloe W and India M.
