Sporting Highlights - 4 March 2022

We had a terrific penultimate League Run last Friday with just short of 200 runners making it round the course in ideal conditions. Max W returned from illness to win the boys' race again and managed to get inside 10 minutes – the first time for some years that this has been achieved. Grace S was first girl home and Max and Grace remain unbeaten all season, with just one race left today, Friday 4 March.

After the exeat next weekend, we revert to our traditional 3 Mile and 5 Mile races to close the season.

The senior netball teams travelled to Roedean on Saturday and played in three closely fought contests. The 1st VI just lost out by 5 goals which was frustrating as Lancing looked the better team throughout, but the team of the day was the 2nd VII who completely outplayed the opposition winning their match 23-2.  Amelia L was awarded POM for her brilliant shooting. Despite the loss to Roedean the 1st VII had a super match on Monday night in the Worthing League where they beat The Vixons Team 32-22.

The hockey teams played in a full block against Portsmouth Grammar School last Saturday. The U14B team travelled away and won 2-1 with Lewis M making a crucial save in goal to prevent Portsmouth Grammar equalising in the final minutes of the game. The U14A and U15A teams narrowly lost 2-1 and 1-0, however were unfortunate not to gain more from the matches. The 2nd team had a physical encounter away at Portsmouth but were also unfortunate not to come away with a win, drawing 1-1.

Mr Carter’s Team of the Week goes to the 1st team who played the best hockey of the season, beating Portsmouth Grammar 4-2, controlling the game and maintaining a high level of possession with Tom H being instrumental in midfield.

The 1st and 2nd football teams fell to defeats at Forest School on Saturday. Having conceded early and gone in two goals behind at half-time the 1st team recovered well in the secnd half. Josh R converted Jamie L’s back post cross to bring the deficit to 1, but despite a late onslaught, Forest held on to claim all three points. A mixed second team including several Fifth Form and two Fourth Form players competed well. It was very pleasing to see Oscar E and Fred D-L step up to the Seniors for the first time, both giving an excellent account of themselves and performing well in the match.

Following on from the success of the Junior House competition, the Senior Inter-House Badminton competition was concluded this week. All Houses played against each other in games of 3 x 2 minutes. Despite a very strong start and fierce competition, Field's and School were unable to clinch the title. Led by Ralph H, Nick Y, Nathan S, Kevin N and Wilf H - Teme House, with 23 points, claimed the title.

The top three houses were as follows: In first place, Teme with 23 points; in second place, School with 21.5 points; in third place, Field's with 20 points.

Following the final weekend of Sussex County Championships, our own Lancing College Swimming Club finished 4th out of 17 Sussex Clubs in the medal table, winning 22 gold, 12 silver and 10 bronze! Alessio M led the team warmups and was our most decorated pupil, winning a total of five Junior Boys' Championship events as well as medalling in almost all his races.

Bethany K continued this weekend in fine style for her club winning silver in 200free, 200Im and 100 fly.

We wish James R, Alessio M, Rania K and Bethany K – who are all ranked in the Top 30 – the best of luck on their quest to attain British and National qualification times over the next few months.
